Potassium Warning

Everyone needs to keep a check on their Potassium, I didn't or I guess you can say my Dr. hasn't & mine hit bottom Friday night at a Football game. I thought I was either dying or having a stroke. My hands were drawed closed & up to my chest & I couldn't speak or move my legs. My husband called 911 & they took me to the hospital where I stayed until Saturday morning. I was dehydrated also. But please everyone, keep a check on this. Also has any of you 5 month post op patients already had blood work done since surgery? I haven't & my surgeon is not suppose to see me until November 6th for my 1st blood work. Is that normal? Tammy Gunter

Hi Tammy, All of our vitamins are so very important and if you do not eat enough potassium based foods you will have so many problems with your kidneys, heart and all major organs because potassium is really more important, moreso than we think. I eat 2-3 banana's EVERYDAY. They are not real big but, that IS one of the things that I will do forever. I also take Shaklee vitamins. I will not take any other vitamin either. I am glad that you r doin better, IF I can help u n ne other way~ just drop me an e-mail. Take care, Crece

I take my vitamins everyday & have my Isopure Protein drink, but I was told that I needed to start Shaklee Vitamins & I am. Do you mind telling me what all I need & how expensive they are? Thanks so much Crece. Tammy

Early on, when I was about 2 months out, I was having trouble with kidney stones. I noticed at that time that my legs ached all the time... not crampy like before surgery, but just a deep ache all the time. While I was in the ER with my kidney stones and they were doing lab work, we found my potassium was low, and they said that was the reason for my achy legs. They gave me some IV potassium, and it all went away. I keep a pretty close eye on it now, and when my legs start to ache again, I talk to my doc about some extra potassium. Glad your doing ok now... Thanks for the reminder!!!!! Hugs, Susan

Tammy, I'm more than five months postop but wanted to say that I had blood work done at 3 months out. At that time my iron was low so I was glad they checked it. I think you should have already had blood work done. My surgeon also had it done again at six months out. Just my opinion. Shel

Thanks for the warning, I am waiting on blood work now to see if this is my problem. Dr. D's office does not do post op blood wor****il your 6 mos post op visit, I thought this was crazy, seems to me you can awfully malnutritioned in 6 mos. I figured I would go to my pcp and get mine ckd more frequently. I had some minor problems and Dr. D's office did do some blood work but only since I had some problems. je

I think it is crazy to, & my surgeon is the same way. My PCP is the one that is keeping a eye on my Potassium now. They did bloodwork yesterday & I have to go back in 2 weeks to be checked again, but honestly i thought I was having a stroke. It was the worst thing I have ever been through. Tammy
