This might be a pretty akward request but, I am getting a bit desperate now. I went back to college to get my degree pretty late in life. Last year I got weight loss sugery done to try and sort of coincide with my graduation of college. Well with successful results of weight loss and my degree in December of 2004, I thought I would be right into the work force once college ended. Well here it is 9th month and I can't find anything and not really sure why. I am sort of worried that I kind of lose out to others who have lived and went to school in Georgia.. But sometimes I get worried that I might get judge for still be a big guy. So I would SOOO appreciate it, if anyone knows anyone in the IT profession and might be able to give me a lead, opportunity, chance etc... It would really top off my year of success. My only option at this point, is probably move back to Missouri where I grew up and got my education and try around there. My family though lives in Athens, so would like to stay in Georgia. Thanks so much for listening and thanks for any help you could send my way.

Dirk, Google "Practice Works" then choose "Dental Systems" this is a Kodak company in Marietta (was just bought out by Kodak a yr or so ago). My son works in the software support division for the orthdontic software support (linux system). They are suppose to have an opening. I do not have a phone number for the HR office. The starting pay is not so great (low 30's). but they have great benefits and it is true what they say "it is esier to get a job if you already have a job". I do know they require college. I know the job market is really tight for IT and has been in this area for a couple of yrs. My hubby is a QA manager (in a very specialized field) and has been laid off since June and still no job. Good Luck Judye

Dirk - It is tough out there for us IT types. I got laid off in March 2002! I worked for a large telecommunications company, and we know what has happened to the telecom industry. Of course, I have used this time wisely, saw 2 new grandchildren brought into the world, my baby (he's 26) got married, and between WLS and a bone fusion of 3 vertebrae - I got my life back! Even with a Master's Degre it is slim pickings. So if you, or anyone, runs across someone who needs an IT Project Manager....holler at me, puleeze! Good luck! Patti

Actually, have you looked into UGA? They have a lot of IT positions open and actually a manager position. Unfortuantely, I don't qualify being a nice entry level. https://jobapp.humanres.uga.edu/hr_app/hr_position_vacancies.cfm

Hi Dirk, Congrats on your degree. That's great. Instead of looking for a specific job, make a list of companies and go on their individual websites and search jobs that way. Although most people want to work in their degreed field, sometimes the way to do that is through another job at a good company. Most companies have IT departments, and it would be easier to move into an IT department when you are already with the company in another division. Good luck, I'm sure you'll find something soon. Plus, it seems like there might be more opportunity in the Atlanta area than in the midwest. Don't give up.
