OK I know Dr. Duncan puts you on a pre-op diet to lose some weight before surgery to see if you are commited, but doesn't it also have something to do with the liver as well, if so how does it help the liver? Melissa

Melissa, It is to shrink your liver the larger you are the bigger your liver is. That is what I was told. Also it is your choice what diet you chose the just tell you an amount to lose and it is up to you. They told me to try any one I have had any success with. I just started walking 4-5 times aweek .Cut out my soft drinks since you are not suppose to have them after surgery anyway and made sure I ate 5-6 times a day and cut out fried food and surgar. They wanted me to lose 25 I lost only 15 but It was just as good . Dr Feilds said to see if you are commited to the lifesyle change. When I got my surgery date Friday I was told I didn't have to lose no more so I was fine with what I had lost...I hope this halps a little. You need to know anything else let me know....Beth

Thanks beth, thats what I thought. I told my sister in law yesterday that it also had to do with the liver and she says "No" it's just to see if you are commited, but then again she used a Dr. named Orreth Bruce Case, that took mostly medicaid patients only and to be honest I don't even think he practices anymore, not sure why, but she didn't have to do some of the things that are required now, and her surgery was Dec. 2003. The 15 lbs. that you lost, what time frame did you lose it in? Melissa

My time frame was My first weigh in was April 12 and this June 24 was my second. So a matter of 2months and a couple days. So i thought it was pretty good. I am un sue about the reson for the liver that is what I recall from Dr.duncan telling us to lose the weight. So who knows....Beth

I was told by my dietician and my PCP that all livers are fatty, even in thin people and that you can't shrink your liver. Thats the info I was given. All doctors have different preop requirements. I would hate to think that a doctor is less competant because he accepts medicaid patients, especially since Dr. Duncan (your choice of doctors) does. Just my humble opinion. Barb

Barb, I didn't mean it to sound that way at all, yes Dr. Duncan takes medicaid, but this Dr. took the majority medicaid patients only that's the reason I think he required less, I have nothing against medicaid at all, I just feel that that was the reason he required less was because of that, I mean my sister in law admitted that she doesn't think they had enough testing done. Sorry If I offended you or anyone else *****ads this, that wasn't what I was trying to do. Melissa

Melissa Don't worry about that I am on medicaid and I think I was required to have just as much done as anyones else insurance . Also It has to be Medically ness. But I don't belive you have offened anyone . But I am one person who is on medicaid and was handled just the same. So cheer up. Put a smile on you r face and it will be just fine..Love ya...Beth
