I (choose) to have bloodless WLS going in. I know that it can be done. I just woundered if anyone had any information I could share with my doctor. I know that Atlanta Medical does bloodless surgery, but I am going to Emory because my doctor does revisions. Anyone else know if WLS can be bloodless going in? I don't know yet if he has an issue with it because my first consult with with his PA. The PA said that he was not sure. Thanks

What exactly do you mean by bloodless surgery? You are bound to bleed a little. Are you saying no blood transfusion b/c of religious reasons? I'm confused!

I would talk to your surgeon. There is very little blood loss with laproscopic RNY, but with ANY surgery, you can only take precautions to limit bloodloss but NO surgeon will promise you a bloodless surgery. Also complications DO happen (like me with my adhesions) which can greatly increase blood loss. Kia 284/209/155 ish

I know that some bleeding is going to happen I was just wondering if anyone discussed this matter with their doctor. I was just wondering if anyone else shared my choice and what they did about it. I don't want to get into a religious discussion since this is not the forum; but yes, my reasons are religious. There are also people who choose to have bloodless surgery and it is "not" for reasons like mine. So...... has anyone who is post op been down this road? I would appreciate hearing about your experience.

Muan, Your right about AMC they will perform bloodless surgery there as a matter of fact. They paged someone to come and talk to me about it and he was there in a matter of minutes. He assisted me with filling out the forms and he was very resourseful. I also opted for this because of religious reasons and was very excited to see that there was a person on call at the hosptial. What I can suggest you do is call the department at Emory that does the scheduling for surgery and ask if they have a contact person for people who want bloodless surgery. Let me know if I can assist you in any way my email address is [email protected] Caren

I think I am also at a loss about blodless surgery, however if in the event of wanting this for religous reasons, I know alot of people who do not want to recieve blood from others due to religous reasons, I know they can donate Autogolous Blood (their own blood to be used on themselves only) prior to surgery in case there is an urgent need for a blood transfusion. While I am sure there are those out there who have had to recieve blood after surgery, this is not usually the norm. There is such a small amount of blood loss during surgery anymore, that it usually isn't a problem. Good Luck to you... Susan

When I did my preop appt at Atlanta Medical I requested bloodless due to personal convictions. My surgery was uneventful for a need for blood, but had anything arisen the staff of doctors, etc knew I was a bloodless patient, then after surgery a tag was on my room door alerting nurses, etc that I was a bloodless patient in the event of any emergencies, plus I saw a similar tag on my file covers. I would discuss it with your doctor before hand, it is not uncommon to have bloodless surgery and I would think most hospitals should be prepared for such. Krystal 4/28/2005 307/264/175
