Pati, WELCOME! I had open RNY, on 10/22/02...Do you have children? If you do, I think that you will understand when I tell you, that you kinda forget the pain. Hopefully someone who is a little newer of a post op, will be able to help. What I can tell you, is that you need to take your meds as perscribed. And when you are able, WALK, WALK, WALK. The gas pain is the worst, and pain meds don't seem to help at all, you need to walk to help it pass. I think that the hardest part for me, was not being able to sleep in my bed, I had to sleep in the recliner. How long is your incision going to be?Mine is about 8-10 inches long, but I know others that are only about 3. That will really determine alot. I wish you all the best, and hope to hear from you soon. By they way, having my RNY was the absolute best thing that I could have ever done for myself and for my family. Cathy

Thank you so much for your message Cathy. You look absolutely great!! I do have a daughter and I did forget all the pain, lol. I know now that this site will give me a lot of helpful information. You are the second person to say walking helps with the pain and I would never have thought that. I would probably have been afraid to move, lol. I hope to talk to you all next week. Thanks again! Hi, Pati and welcome to the Georgia message boards this is a real friendly bunch (and smart too!). I had the laproscopic RNY so I cannot give any advice about the open RNY - but from my experience about 4 months ago and what others have said: 1. Start on your multivitams now - that way your body will have a nice headstart on healing. 2. Take little to the hospital. The gowns they give you to wear are all you really need. 3. I was not in much pain at all really, but hit your pain button whenever you think you *might* need some relief in a little while - it's best to stay on top of it. 4. Walk. You might not want to do that much but it is honestly the best thing you can do - before AND after surgery. 5. Your tastes WILL change after surgery. Don't buy a lot of anything. Congratulations on your upcomming 'second birthday' it is truely amazing what this surgery can do for you! Kia 284/211/155 ish
