I desperately want to have WLS, but I don't know where to start. Do I need to contact a surgeon first or contact my insurance company? I have United Healthcare and I have noticed that most testimonials about them were dated back between 2000 - 2002. How do I find out if they pay for WLS? Has anyone been approved by them recently? I am so afraid to begin this journey, but at the same time I am motivated because of all the success stories I have seen on this sight. I am sincerely grateful to receive any responses.

Kimberlee, Probably the best way to start is to call the customer service number on the back of your insurance card and see if the insurance will cover the surgery... and if so, what are the requirements.. such as MBI, prior dieting documentation, etc... If you have lots of money then this wont be an issue... but the surgery is expensive.

I have United Healthcare and they paid 100% (minus copays for doctor's visits). It depends on what your employer has in their policy rider. My employer had treatment for Obesity approved, so I was approved (after an appeal). Call your Insurance company and see what they say. At that point, if they say you are covered, then call the surgeon and find out what they want you to do first. Some want a letter from your PCP first, others want to see you first. If you are not covered, go to your Human Resources folks at work and see about getting an exception. Your company CAN approve a surgery, but doesn't HAVE to.... it's worth a try, some companies can see the benefits of a loyal, HEALTHY and happy employee, others can not. Best of luck to you. I had my surgery on March 23, 2005 and have lost 71 lbs since my surgery. 82 lbs total since seeing my surgeon. It makes a heck of a difference.
