Supplements-how much and what kind?
Okay guys, paranoia has set in. I went to a group seminar for Dr. Champion with my friend Beth last night, and they have me second guessing my supplement regimen.
Currently I take, every day:
1 multivitamin (the big horse pill kind)
1000 mg Vitamin C-500 in the morning, 500 at night with my iron
iron (the standard gram measurement, not the slow release kind)
2 Viactiv calcium chews. I tried the calcium in pill form and I swear I have never seen a pill that big before in my life. It made my stoma quake just looking at it!
also all my prescription meds that I can't seem to get off of
Three days a week I take a sublingual B-12 and a B complex
Now, I'm almost 1 year out and so far my labs look good. However, Dr. Champion's patients have to take 2 multi-vits a day (even the big ones), with extra iron, on top of their iron supplements. Then he started talking about bone density and how they measure their patients to make sure they aren't loosing bone mass and that their calcium regimen is working for them....uhhh....I feel like I missed the homework assignment and am now not sure I'm doing this right!
Any input?
Thanks!
Kelle

Every doc is different but here is my daily take
2 Mega multivitamins
2 calcium pills (calcium citrate)
1 iron pill
1 b- complex
And once a month I get a b-12 shot (1000 micrograms)
I don't know if you are getting any benifit from taking your calcium chews - because they are calcium carbonate and calcium carbonate requires gastric juices to break it down - and you dont have those any more! Calcium citrate doesn't require the stomach acid, that is why docs recommend you take that type. Also for iron, stay away from Ferrous Sulfate, and instead take Ferrous Fumarate. I am the type who can take whole pills (even the calcium ones) whole with no problems - but if they are too big for you - get a cheap pill splitter and cut those babies into halves or even quarters if you need too.

Hi, Kelle,
Here's what I take:
OptiSource Vitamins (two in the morning and two in the evening)
Calcium Citrate with Magnesium and Vitamin D (two a day at same time, not with iron)
Iron - Trinsicon (one a day)
B-12 Shot (one a month)
My nutritionist was pretty emphatic that the calcium be Calcium Citrate (something about bone mass, better absorption, etc.) and the particular iron I have chosen worked well for my angel, Jen Layman. The OptiSource vitamins are specifically made for WLS patients and can be ordred online at Walgreens. I order two months at a time to get free shipping. I'm sure there are better ones out there, but I have been pleased since beginning these in March, and the price is reasonable ($24.99 a bottle, will last a month).
Love you!!!
Becky
Hope this helps!
At 18 months out I am still taking (as prescribed by my surgeon):
2 multi vitamin (I use viactive chews)
2 tums
b12 sublingual 2 x weekly
I also do an iron supplement daily as I have a prior anemia problem.
No problems with any lab work as I have it checked every 3 months (again due to the anemia problem
)
Marie
