Low Sugar

Before my surgery 11 months ago I was on medication for Type II diabetes. One month after surgery my sugar levels returned to normal and my doctor took me off the meds. I have had a few episodes of it dropping low in the evenings, down into the 60's. My PCP said that if it drops below 70 to have a little carbs and it will be fine. Then she had me start having a carb snack before bed. Last night (early evening about 8:00) I had that old familiar dizzy feeling and I took my blood sugar level. It was 52! I munched on a graham cracker and it seemed to help. After a short nap I took my sugar again and it was up to 73. I still had another snack before I went to bed. Seems like waiting until bedtime for a snack isn't going to work anymore. I have even had to have a midmorning snack to help keep my sugar under control. Has anyone had problems with low blood sugar? Anyone else have Type II diabetes? Patti

Patti, I am so glad you posted this. I, too, had diabetes before surgery, on 2 diabetes meds and have not had to go back on my meds. I am experiencing some dizzy spells and just hadn't thought about my sugar being too low! I am certainly going to make sure I check my sugar during these times and see if thats the problem. Man, ya gotta love this board! thanks Patti... Barb

Something just felt TOO familiar, that's why I drug out the old blood sugar kit. It's all dusted off now and turned to a fresh page in the log book. So now I am checking it periodically throughout the day. Same with the blood pressure, figured I'd just get some fresh numbers. Hope you are doing better, I know your first days have been "trying" for lack of a better word. We all have been there, so you aren't going to shock us by telling your feelings. But I do believe "explatives" are censored, so use code words! I know I pegged the "*****O-Meter" quite a bit when I first got home! Poor hubby, he tried to be such a good nurse, but the hat didn't look good with his beard! Just hang in there. It gets better.....I promise. Patti
