Please help me!! Today is the final stage of my process before submission to the insurance company. At my pre-op consultation with the doctor I was told that I need to lose 30 pounds before surgery. How can I SUCCESSFULLY lose 30 pounds in about 2 months?? I am desperate for this surgery and don't want to have it postpone. I was told if I gained or did not lose the 30 pounds that the surgery would be postponed. Please give me suggestions on how I can lose 30 pounds in about 2 months. Thanks from the bottom of my heart.

I also used Dr. Duncan for my surgery (4/25/05) and was told to loose 20 lbs. I ended up only loosing 10 lbs before the surgery and they did it anyway. What they want to see is that you are committed to the weightloss process and that you can be successful in loosing wieght because the surgery is just a tool. Diets aren't fun and you will have to work for the next 2 months but it is worth it. I am 5 weeks post-op and as of this morning I have lost 55 lbs since the surgery. Just work hard and be sure to loose some weight and you should be fine. Look at my Profile if you want to see what I went through. I started at 416.5 lbs. lost to 406.5 lbs. at my second appointment and then gained 2 lbs. at the next appointment, then lost 2 more lbs at the final appointment for a total of 10 lbs. Best of luck, I'll be praying for you. Torre

Hi Phyllis I had to lose 30-40 pounds before my surgeon would approve me and I used Atkins... it is very limited on the types of food you can eat, but you can at least eat enough to feel full and still lose weight quite quickly. The trick with Atkins is sticking to it exactly... there's really no wiggle room for a cheat now and then... I started on it on April 30th and have lost 38 pounds as of last Monday... Try it!.... it may work well for you.. and the added bonus of cutting sugar out of your diet completely will help with your energy level and also reduce your hunger... or is it the lack of carbs that does that??... I dunno, I just know I don't get hungry hardly at all

Dr. D was my surgeon also. I was told to loose weight but never given a specific amount. I lost a couple of lbs and was able to have my surgery. I would suggest trying Atkins. That seems to be the fastest way to loose weight. Good luck to you and keep your eye on the prize. Hugs, Tonya

Phyllis: I was told to lose 25lb before surgery and I went on Atkins immediately, at my last appt before surgery I had lost only 17lbs, but they went ahead and scheduled my surgery. I think they are looking for an earnest attempt for you to try and lose weight before surgery. Of course, each doctor is different, so they may hold you to the whole 30lbs. I also think that dieting before my surgery helped me have an easier recovery. Do the best you can and good luck on your journey! Kelly S

Hi! Phyllis, Everyone is required to loose weight before their surgery some loose more than others I lost about 34lbs. Try cutting back on portion size of food you eat i.e., eating 1/2 biscuit instead of a whole one, 1 slice of pizza instead of 2 or 3. I ate lots of salads, tuna & chicken about every day for lunch and dinner. Drink 1% or skim milk, and eat yogurt it will help you lose weight. Try eating 6 small meals a day, i.e., yogurt breakfast, snack apple, lunch salad, tuna, snack, banana, salad or diet meal from store and fruit. Drink only water; water cleans out the body and it helps you lose weight. By the time my surgery came around I was dranking about a gallon of water every day, if you feel you're hungry drink a glass of water. When you want to snack eat fruit. I did. See your nutritionist they can help you set up a food plan. My nutritionist stated that I did not have to do the surgery if I kept going like I was; I told her I can lose weight its keeping it off. I am now 8 mts out from 310lbs to 178lbs, size 26/28 to a 16/14. You can do this. Don't worry about how much you have to loose but work on it. They want to make sure you are willing and able to keep with a diet profile plan. You have to follow your doctors orders of what to eat after the surgery so if you start now eating smaller portions and make sure you eat slowly, chew your food well it will help after you have the surgery. Also I walked around the block in my neighborhood about 3 to 4 times a week. Hope this helps! You will soon be one of us. Take care! Email if you need to talk at [email protected]. ki

I know a lot of folks are recommending the Atkins diet, which probably would be good for a short term thing. My hubby is doing the SouthBeach diet. He is doing good, in fact, it is the first diet he has really been able to stick with. The best thing..no measuring. Also, it is strange, but for the most part, it is foods that I can have (except for salads and such), so I am not cooking separate meals! It is low carb, just like what we are supposed to do. It may be a way for you to see what post-op will be like. Patti
