Ok guys please help me figure this one out. I should be having my rnygb in the fall, I have been talking to alot of post op wls patients. Friday night I met my husbands cousins bestfriend, she had wls with the same surgion about 2 years ago who is doing mine. Dianne looks great she has lost 130 pounds but her sugar levels have started going crazy. Friday morning Dianne called Amber and asked her to come over because she wasnt feeling well. When Amber got there Dianne had passed out in the shower,so Amber took her to the closest ambulance station and they checked her blood sugar level. It was 39 so they gave her orange juice and a donught. By the time she got to the hospitol it was 180.-- She and I were talking friday night, she came by to have it checked before she went to bed at my mother in laws house, and it was 78. She blamed it all on the surgery and told me to really think it thru that she doesnt know if she would do it again. I watched her drink 2 glasses of coke and eat 2 good size brownies. I am confused I did not think you could have coke and brownies? I made a commint about coming off caffine about 2 weeks ago, tryin to prepare my self as much as possible so everything isnt such a shock, Dianne said "I have a stronger will than she does, she just could not give up her sodas. I believe she has not been eating right from the beginning but she says it is from the surgery. Not that I am at all convinced or swayed but It just doesnt add up to me. Is this common to get hypoglycimia after wls or is this from her not sticking to the recommendations from our surgion?

Hi Hon... I dont know anything about hypoglycimia sorry..... but I can tell you that some people can eat sugar with no problems.... me I can have it in small doses.... more makes me quesy or buts me to sleep... I try to control it for the most part, but sweets have always been my thing.. which is how I got to 301... I wont lie and tell you I dont eat them , but I do eat just a little..... MOST OF THE TIME... ... I have found that I do love my meat now... could have done with out it before.... but as you will hear.... we didnt have brain surgery... I do stick with the program for the most part.... hopefully that will be enough... good luck to you on your journey ... I am sure you will do fine...

Hypoglycemia and Diabetes are related in so many ways. DIabetes causes the sugars to be high and having the surgery usually helps to decrease that and regulate them to normal. Hypoglycemia prior to sugery (from what I've read - I'm not a professional) is usually less detected because as a bigger person we can make up for it by the "junk" we eat to increase the sugar levels in our body. The best way to recover from hypoglycemia is NOT to eat junk....you should eat NATURAL carbs.....whole grains, fruits, etc and NOT the brownies, sodas and candies that tend to cause a "sugar high". This surgery isn't something that will make you stop wanting the "Junk" food, but if you follow your doctor's orders and eat the correct types of food then your blood sugars should be fine. I'm not a nutritionist - nor am I a doctor - but if you follow the instructions of your physician you shouldn't have to worry about things. Eating the junk food make syour body process sugars incorrectly and it will make you bottom out. (No - it's not the ONLY reason you bottom out - but you'll stay more regulated with good food choices) Just my $.02 worth

HI! I agree with Dee Dee & Kiwi. Although I don't know about your friend's eating patterns other than what you mention, usually when I hear of problems folks are having, it's because they don't stick to the program the way they should. Sugar is something I battle over, and I HAVE popped the occasional cookie in my mouth, but I can tell you I ate a brownie a couple of weeks ago, that made me so lethargic I didn't know what to do. I was at work, so I drank a bunch of clear water (no crystal light like I normally do) and felt better a little later. I think if you stick to your proteins low carbs and water like you should, as the majority of us have, you should be fine. GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Tami -138

Hey, Erin! I just wanted you to know that I'm thinking of you! I didn't respond earlier because I have no idea what hypo.... is. That fact is probably a good thing! I'm glad some knowledgable folks could answer. I do know that this surgery is a tool, and it is our responsibility to use it correctly. If you follow your surgeon and nutritionist's orders, you should be fine! Welcome to the Ga Board!!! Please keep posting!!! (We are trying to sell four houses and attempting to buy one right now, so I have not been as regular online as I like. Please keep us in your prayers.) Hugs to you!!! Becky
