What are your "safe foods"
Since I am 4 weeks out from surgery I have been trying new foods in small amounts. No bad stuff, just moist chicken, cream soups, hamburger, I try to stick to high protein stuff since I cannot tolerate shakes. Anyway my question to you all is what is your safe food? Just about any new thing I try makes my tummy upset - not enough to throw up mind you, but I get a queasy feeling that lasts for hours. I eat very small portions when trying anything new because I *really* hate to throw up - so I am looking for new ideas.
Bearing in mind that every person is different - and was on different schedules. At 4 weeks out I was on soft/purred foods. I am now 9 months out and can't tolerate chicken....in any form and still prefer to stick to "softer" foods. (Mashed potatoes, carrot soufle, peas/green beans etc.) I hate throwing up - but the more "solid" foods I eat the harder it is for me to keep it down. Honestly I look at this as kind of a good thing because it keeps me in line with what I'm supposed to eat vs. what I'd "like" to eat......
I love to eat salads - but I wouldn't recommed them at the stage you're at....I was about 3 months out before I had one.....and 99% of the time they LOVE me too!!!! LOL
As far as protein.....I didnt' find a protein drink I liked till I was about 5 months out. Now that I've found one I LOVE to have a drink in place of a meal!
My suggestion - follow your doctors plan with what they say you can have - and eat slowly.....give it a few minutes between bites to see if your stomach can handle it.....
You're doing fantastic - keep up the good work!

What is the name of the protein drink that you LOVE to have in place of a meal? Oh, to be so fortunate as that!!
I am 4 weeks out and am still having trouble getting enough fluid in. Milk goes down the best, so I've been using SF Carnation Instant Breakfast. But it only has 4 g of protein per pack. I use 2 of them a day added to 32 ounces of milk. That gives me 40 grams for 580 calories. I really enjoy drinking these, but I think I may do better with something that has more protein.
I am eating around 2 oz 2-3 times a day. I probably get 65-70 g a day which is close to the goal I was given of 72-80 g a day. Thanks a bunch!

I am 5 1/2 weeks out now. I can handle low fat cheese and actually will choose it over meat most of the time. Also eggs are a good choice (I scramble, fry in Pam, and boil and have handled all of these well). My doctor also recommended smooth peanut butter. I don't really like it, so I have not tried it but that seems like it would be gentle on the tummy.
Have you tried unflavored protein powder? You can mix it in pudding or drinks and it does not have a lot of taste.

Hey Kia,
At your stage (I'm 8 1/2 mos out), I tried refried beans with melted cheese and sour cream. What a treat!
Also, and best of all, buy sugar free Jello Instant Pudding. It comes in some really great flavors like Butterscotch, Pistachio, Chocolate, etc.
It has never upset my stomach. My nutritionist puts tofu in hers and I tasted it...couldn't taste the tofu at all. It didn't have a weird consistency, either. This would add alot of protein to your intake.
There is a protein bar that I found that has 14 g of protein and tastes exactly like Little Debbie Nutty Bars! It is a wafer and is light, not heavy as lead, and very delicious. I like the Chocolate Peanut Butter the best. It is called "Power Crunch". If you have trouble finding it, you can order it online. Just search for "power crunch".
Good luck. I would stay away from anything with sugar in it right now. The things that did (and still do) upset my stomach were: anything carbonated, shrimp (I hate to lose shrimp), any dry meat (I used sour cream alot), I did very well with veggies like green beans and very moist broccoli.
