Home and in too much pain
hey everyone, well I had my surgery on Friday around 2pm, I had lapro , though I still have like 7 cuts on me, and I have a drainage tube that has a little cup with it that I have to empty all the time. I have the WORST pain in my left shoulder. I dont know what it is... I have rubbed, my husband has rubbed it, I have taken my pain medication and nothing is making it go away. I thought it might be gas, so i took the milk of mag, pecid ac, and some tums. and its still there. I did really well with surgery I was up and walking, peeping on my own, and Ive not even been sick once. Im up to 3/4 cups of juice now. I have to go back on Wed and remove this tube. The other suck part is I have gained 10 pounds. but my mom and husband said it must be water weight. I knew what I weighed before surgery, and when I got home it was higher. Im really hopeing that goes down. and of course to make this a little worse, my period came yesterday too. and I can even take a bath or shower till they take all this dressing off. I have this body wrap on.DR appel said I did really well, Im glad that Ive not been sick at all. Ive drank my water, milk, juice and took my vitamins. I even walked around kroger and cvs today to get a few things. If anyone knows what this shoulder pain my be or if you have any suggestions on what i can do to make it stop please tell me... Im hoping I will start loosing soon.

When I had my surgery, I had pain under my left shoulder that would not go away. I mentioned it to my surgeon after a couple of days, he told me it was due to the drain placement. Seems as if the tip of the drain was under the left daphragm. When the drain was emptier and mashed down the pain was like a b*_*_#.At other times it was just soreness. When the drain was removed the pain went away immediately. I would suggest that you call your surgeon and ask if this may be the cause or if it may be something else that needs to be looked at. As for the weight gain, it is not unusual for a person to gain 10 to 15 lbs in the first week after surgery. This is water weight due to the fluids given during and immediately after surgery. You will lose tha****er weight and more in the next week or so. Don't get discouraged, if you feel up to walking around the stroes you are doing fine.

Jennifer,
I also had the shoulder pain, and rest assured, it does go away. Mine went away after the drain was pulled. Talk about relief.......
Also keep in mind that this pain is also caused from gas. Not the normal bowel gas we are accustomed to, but when they do this or any other type of Laproscopic surgery the fill the abdomen with a gas to be able to see around the belly easier. When they are thru, they expell the gas from the belly but inevitably some usually remains. When you stand up to walk, gravity and the gas bubbles rise, and usually land in the shoulder. These bubbles will be absorbed by the body, and other that being painful are usually not any other problems.
As for the weight gain, I didn't have any with my surgery, but just spent 3 days in the hospital last week with a kidney stone. When I came home from the hospital on Thursday night I had gained 13 lbs from when I weighed the morning before going in. Talk about disappointment. After thinking about it for a few minutes it occurred to me that it was all of the IV Fluids I had been given in the hospital. By yesterday morning, and tee tee'ing it all out, I was back down to my weight before going in the hospital. It's nice to feel my rings loose and my fingers no longer swollen. Give it a few days, and I'm sure you'll lose the extra pounds too.
