I'm beginning the process of starting school to become a teacher. Any state of Georgia teachers in the forum? If so, does the insurance vary from county to county or is it a statewide thing? I've got several years to go but I'm just curious as to what the insurance is like.... how much I'll be paying for followup visits with my surgeon, fills, etc....
If you are working for a county (not a private school), the insurance is provided by the State. AKA State Health Benefit Plan (SHBP). They only recently started covering WLS, don't know how much your fills would cost, but follow up surgeon visits would just be the copay of whatever plan you picked. Usually around $25-ish.
ETA: The State givith and it takith away...in other words, coverage for your fills may not be around by the time you are employed. Generally speaking your surgeon follow ups would be covered if your doc is on the plan. When I started this process last year, I did 2 surgical consults. They were both covered by my $25 copay even though the insurance did not cover WLS.

I am not a teacher, but I am a state employee. There are several state employees on here.
I have a degree in education and have no desire to teach! Have you considered a broader subject as a major and a minor in education to get your teaching certification? My degree is pretty much worthless, since I'll likely never teach. I wish I had thought of a back up plan.

I am also a teacher. Middle grades science. I am in the process of approval for RNY, and am doing the 6 month diet and support groups. As for insurance, with SHBP you never know what will happen from one open enrollment period to another, still I am greatful to have a job with insurance. I've done lots of jobs, being self-employed for 20 years, but teaching is what I love best! ( having 8 weeks off in the summer is not so bad either!) Good luck with your career choice.
