Read, read and read some more... Find out what kind of "eater' you are. Ask the Dr. at your consultation.

Find out what your surgeon recommends... in my case I was a candidate for either... and personally I didn't like the idea of a foreign object in my body, the fills...those big needles and that you didn't loose as much w/ a lap band. The long term studies show a higher % of wt loss from RNY.

It's really a personal decision once the doc says you can qualify for either one...

I would visit the lap band and rny boards... you will find the answer that is right for you

Dolly,
We are in the same boat, This is a very hard decision and I can not reiterate what the other 2 have said.. research..research and research again. I am leaning towards Lap Band as it appears to have less complications medically and less complications later on medically than RNY and I am a little nervous about having my stomach cut and organs rerouted, I want to state this is my personal opinion and feelings and I am very well entitled to this as you will find some people want to force their values or opinions on you and others want you to not say anything bad about what they choose but You must make a decision that is going to work for you Dolly a decision that you can live with for the rest of your life. This is not a small decision and one you can't later change your mind even with the band it is a lifelong commitment which most think I will take it out later(I did) but not that simple, yes it is a medical object inside you but think of it like if you had to have a heart pace maker in to save your life(This theory from the seminar) Also, attend a seminar, which I think seminars will open your eyes to both surgeries as well. I wanted NO parts of RNY until the seminar and it now got me to the point where I am weighting each as an option but leaning more towards the band. Good luck and maybe you may try to attend the Meet N Greet to speak with some GA folks.

Don't forget the DS either!  I went into this journey in 2005 thinking I would have a band or RNY but my PCP and a surgeon felt the switch would be better for me.  CHeck out the DS forum also.
