Doctor/surgery Question & PCOS

Hi everyone,  I've been diagnosed with PCOS (Polysitic Ovarian Syndrome- a syndrome that causes insulin and testosterone levels to raise which in turn causes weight gain. Insulin and testosterone messes with monthly cycle and can cause infertility) -and have struggled with weight all my life(good to find out there was a reason for wieght gain). My mother-in-law had the Lap Band procedure and has had great success so I have been thinking about getting it done myself. I was just wondering if anyone in the Atlanta area had, had surgery with Dr. Gammar Rashid of Peachtree Bariatric (Dr. Titus Duncan is in that office also) and if she is recommended. Because I have real concerns and fears about not having the right doctor for surgery. (I've never had any kind of surgery in my entire life, yea I know I'm only 25 but still its a scary thing)  But I'd really appreciate any kind of feed back about that doctor or others recommended-AND even if there is anyone else out there that has PCOS and has Lap Band, what their success rate has been with having Lap Band. Hi Julie.  I too have PCOS.  I was diagnosed in my mid 20's after going to many doctors to see why my cycles were always messed up and why I kept gaining weight and couldn't lose weight no matter how hard I tried.  They would just say heres the pill it will fix your cycle and you need to go on a real diet.  I was so frustrated.  I finally went to an endo and he diagnosed me.  He put me on Gluc *** and I took it for 6 months but it made me sick everyday so even though I was losing weight I had to stop taking it so needless to say the weight came back.  I talked with my OB and my PCP about having Gastric Bypass and they said it wouldn't cure the PCOS as there isn't a cure but that they thought it would help my symptoms.  So I had WLS and lost 120 lbs and my PCOS is in check.  No more medicine for me!  My surgeon is Dr. Paul Macik and he did a wonderful job.  He is very skilled and kind.  I can't really help you with Dr. Rashid because I haven't heard of her.  I wish you the best of luck.   Take care,  Bonnie

Julie, this board is wonderful but not very active. You might want to post at the lapband site...click on Forums in top center of page and then click on lapband.  good luck

I have not dealt with Dr Rashid, but Dr Hobson from the same practice did my RNY.  I went from 474 pre op to (weight one week before surgery 08/29/07) to 398.5lbs. You will love the office and they are the best in Atl.   Although I do not have experience with lap band, I wish you all the best.  They are a very helpful office and when things do not seem to be moving, push, push and push somemore!
