Topic: Has anyone heard of this?
I am a little over 2 years post RNY and have lost 110 lbs and done great! I heard that after a couple of years, the malabsorption does not work and your body re-adjusts and that is why weight gain is common. I feel like I have made healthy eating changes and am certainly more active but this concerns me.. Has anyone experienced this or heard this too?

Topic: RE: silastic ring?
I'm having Bauman do mine with the silastic ring.  Surgery is Feb 9th. I haven't heard of many complications but I suspect it's similar to those of the lap band. (Erosion and such.) I'm not too worried about it.  If something goes wrong then it could be removed easily enough. Just be sure to be compliant and keep a close eye on yourself.

Topic: Article documents preliminary findings about fractures after any type of bariatric surgery

An early analysis of a study done at the Mayo Clinic was presented by ASMBS president, John Backer, MD at the Endocrine Society in June 2009 which found that those who had bariatric surgery were nearly 4 times as likely to sustain a fracture after surgery than the general population. They were not sure if the fractures were due to vitamin deficiencies prior to surgery, malabsorbtion issues after surgery or possibly because people's bodies shapes and centers of balance had changed substantially. The following excerpt points to the need to get sufficient supplimentation of calicium and vitamin D regardless of your surgery type.

"Before and after gastric bypass, patients are routinely told to take at least 1,200 milligrams of calcium daily, and usually 800 milligrams of D, but that may not be enough," Baker said.

Monitoring patients closely is crucial, he said. "No matter which surgery [of several bariatric surgery options] they have had done, they need to be monitored for calcium, vitamin D levels and parathyroid hormones long term," he said. Parathyroid hormones help increase calcium levels in the blood.

Topic: Support Group - Jacksonville, FL
I'm a OH Support Group Leader here in Jacksonville, FL and would like to send an invitation to anyone who'd like to join us for a meeting in the near future.

We meet on the 1st Thursday night of each month, 6:30 PM.  Its a dinner meeting which is usually held at the Town Center or Tinsel Town . . . . which seems to be centrally located for everybody.

If you're interested in joining us, please let me know so I can add you to my mailing list and be sure you're invited to future meetings.  Are meetings are open to people, no matter what type of surgery you may have had.

In the meantime, tell me something about you and if you have a profile on OH, please direct me there.

I look forward to meeting pre ops and post ops and those that are just in the curiosity phase of the journal.

Be Blessed,
LaWanda

Topic: questions about fobi
I am planning on having a revison of my band due to erosion and i'm looking more twords fobi, but had a few questions

1. Can it be done laproscopic?
2. What is the recovery time with going back to work?
3. How do you feel about your decision?
4. To the ones who have had the surgery what was the worst part?
5. I heard they leave a feeding tube in after surgery... is that true?

Iv'e done some reasearch online, but of coarse things aren't always as they seem in real life. So I was hoping for some experianced answers :)
