Topic: Can I practice contact sports after Fobbi?
I am going to have this procedure done in feb/2011 in Brazil. I wonder if I'll be able to play soccer and lift weights after the surgery.

hi there,
I am 7 yrs post op and headed back under the knife 6/15 for revision, I regained over 50 pounds. I can tell you if you follow your diet the dr gave you, the surgery works but we have to work the surgery. I suggest adding even more protien, protein makes you full longer, starch fills you but can wear off in about 1-2 hours and you are hungry again, not to mention starch turns to sugar and you gain added weight. When I first started trial and error stages, I found I could handle sugar in very small amounts, then I found I could handle sugar a little more each time as time went on, I went from dumping on one bite of cake, to eating 3 bites, 4 bites, half a slice now to a full slice without getting sick, I can still get sick from time to time but none the less I can eat it. I tried every protien out there and can tell you whey is hideous to me, I simply can not stand the taste, I did try a new one recently and was so excited, it has 17 grams in one scoop and is flavorless, it does not mix well in juice or friuts but anything milk based or even like the protein shakes special k, slim fast etc you can not taste it. The name of it is ANY WHEY, I will be using this post op as a supplement until I can reach my desired weight then if I get hungry in my routine eating patterns, I will add a shake until I can maintain. I have a plan! :-)
The one thing I have learned in my weight gain after surgery is I have to watch out for red flags, they are the type of foods I was raised on and still crave like mashed potatoes, french fries, breads, gravy, fried foods, pies, cakes, candy the surgery is a great tool, but that is all it is, a tool. I have to be very aware of what I choose to eat from here on out. I hope the tip helps you as I would never want anyone to go through the surgery and fail as I have then have to go back but at least I am fortunate and the company I work for covers it. If you need anything feel free to reach out and I will get back to you. Best of luck to you on your continued weight loss.

That's partially true, and partially not-true.

Over time, the intestines compensate for their shortening by growing more 'vili' to absorb more. That does reduced the efficacy of the malabsorption process, but not by a whole lot.

What is more common with RNY is that the new stomach opening can stretch, resulting in your stomach emptying faster and you getting hungry sooner.

It all still boils down to using your tool properly, paying attention to what you put in your mouth and keeping an active lifestyle.

Topic: RE: silastic ring?
The reason the Fobi pouch introduced the silastic ring was to ensure that the new opening for the stomach to the intestines does not stretch over time. Unlike the lap band, the silastic ring used in the Fobi is not adjustable.

Research has shown that gastric bypass patients tend to have a weight regain after three to four years, presumably because the opening in the stomach stretches. This means the stomach empties faster, leaving you hungry sooner, thus eating more.

I had the Fobi 2 1/2 years ago. I eat approximately a cup of food at a sitting and stay full for about 2 1/2 - 3 hours. I'm very glad I got it.

Hi there! If you're feeling hunger, I would recommend you talk to a nutritionist who specializes in gastric bypass patients and review your diet. I'm sure you can make some adjustments that will keep you full and not put the weight back on.

Topic: RE: questions about fobi
Hi! I had the Fobi done two and a half years ago by Dr. Pirillo.

1.  Yes, mine was done laporoscopically.
2.  I was released back to work in eight weeks.
3. The best decision I've ever made.
4. For me, the first three months were the hardest. Getting the food right, getting my energy back, eating enough protein, setting up a schedule. After that, It was pretty fun.
5. No feeding tube for me. I did have a drain, which was taken out before I went home. Some have to leave their drains in and have them removed at their post-op checkup a week later.

If you have more questions, ask!

Topic: Cybregrrl back on the prowl with an update!
I honestly can't believe it's been two and half years since my surgery. Time really does fly!

I got on the scales this morning and weighed in at 148. That's down from my highest weight of 450-ish, for a loss of 302 pounds. I have lost six small bales of hay or an average football lineman!

Alas, I still have the skin to fit that lineman. However, I will be having hernia surgery and either a tummy tuck or lower body lift at the end of the year. Yay! My surgeon estimates approximately 25-30 pounds of excess skin, which should leave me right where I want to be: around 120-125 pounds.

Recently, I had an attack of pancreaitis. I was in the hospital for three days on a saline drip, NPO. Not fun! Be warned: Pancreaitis is a posible complication of gastric bypass surgery. I was letting my diet slip, but boy did my body tell me in no uncertain terms to get back on track.

I found this list on my profile of things I'd like to do when I lost weight:

Run up a flight of steps without being out of breath.
*I can quickly walk up two flights of steps without being out of breath.

Shop in any regular-sized clothing and shoe store.
*I can!

Buy a pair of tall boots.
*I have this gorgeous pair of tall boots that make my legs look fabulous!

Buy a designer ****tail dress.
*I don't have a designer ****tail dress yet, but I do have a couple of very nice dresses.

Learn to ballroom dance.
*Taking salsa classes this summer.

Finally get a stamp in my passport and fit comfortably in the airplane seat while doing it.
*I can fit in the airplane seat, but no international trips yet.

Cross my legs.
*Crossed as I'm typing this.

Go hiking and camping again.
*No camping trips yet, but a few excursions with friends.

Learn how to kayak.
*Not yet.

I'm told pantyhose can be comfortable, I'd like to find out if that's true.
*I still don't like pantyhose, but I'm amazed at how easy they are to put on now!

Borrow my mom's and sister's clothes. Watch out!
*Mom borrows clothes from me. Sis has gained weight and lent me her smaller clothes.

Finally feel comfortable on stage so I can take up that lounge singer act I've been planning
.
*I sing karaoke two nights a week and have been asked to audition for a couple of bands!

I am wearing size 8 and 10 pants, mostly Medium tops and dresses (depending on the fit) and size 7 shoes. Men call me 'hot' and 'sexy'!

The attention from the guys is the craziest. Having been a big girl all of my life, it's not something I'm accustomed to. But I like it!

I'm religious about my vitamins. I get my protein in - although I still supplement with a protein shake several days a week. I eat about a cup of food at a sitting. I'm always drinking water or decaf iced tea. I have a few alcoholic drinks a week and I do have sweets, in moderation.

I feel that I'm much more in control of my life and my food since surgery. I'll forever be grateful to the help of my surgeon, my nutritionist and my therapist for giving me the tools to succeed.

My therapist fired me last year. She told me I had 'excellent coping mechanisms' and was 'normal'. So, I've been flying solo ever since and doing well.

I've posted a few pics of me from the last six months.

If you're considering surgery, please do your research on the procedure, the complications/side effects, your surgeon and your hospital. Also make sure your general practitioner is on-board or find another who is willing to be part of the program.

I'm glad I did this and I've no regrets!

Keep the faith!

Cy

PS - New pics on my profile!

Topic: Dr. Mario Alberto Almanza-Reyes
I was just posting this because I've had more people than I thought, write me and let me know how much their sorry and how they are praying. My momma is one of the nicest people out there, I wish that we can individually meet each and every person on this website that are planning on going to Dr. Almanza. I wish I could take you guys through a normal day in my life now that everything has messed up in my life. Going through my last summer as a high school student. I can't have fun... I won't have fun. I want justice to be served!!! I want to save someone's life. Please this is NO JOKE!! I wake up everyday and I think and pray about anybody who's in or going into surgery with Dr. Almanza... I pray for you guys. I don't even know you guys. My mom has been in ICU on a ventilator for 7 days now... my best friend... I can't go see her whenever I want to anymore... visiting hours are precise. My mom won't be able to see the 17th Anniversary of me arriving in this world, because she's too busy going through something that shouldn't have ever happened!!! DOCTORS MAKE MISTAKES... BUT WHAT KIND OF DOCTOR MAKES MISTAKES OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN.. Yes, you might have had a WONDERFUL experience... but listen to the stories people.. just because you were lucky DOES NOT mean that everybody else was. There are many people around the United States and Canada that are dealing with their friends and/or family members DYING with deadly infections, holes in stomachs, esophagus, etc. You guys keep telling your friends to go.... and eventually, you are going to go through what me and my family and plenty other families are going through right now. I'm not trying to harsh Dr. Almanza's "mellow".... I am truly, honestly, and dedicative to preventing as many people from going to this doctor as possible. Please spend the extra money and getting done by someone who is, not only cheap and kind, but dedicated to helping you. Not a doctor who is just going to WHAM BAM over and never see you post-op (to many people). Please PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE..... I am not doing this to get back at Dr. Almanza or anybody that is working over there just because they've done this to my momma. I am doing this to prevent YOU from ever going through something like this. It IS NOT FUN.
Love always and forever,
Miranda

Please spread the word with your surgeon's office and support group. You do not have to be a member of the GA Losing for Life Group to participate. Everyone is WELCOME.

People with the FP will have the same malabsorption of micronutrients that people with RNYs have. Afterall, the Fobi is just an advanced RNY. The limbs of the small intestine work the same way.
