WAY 0T - HOW DO I PLANT A COCONUT?

OK, while on vacation in Pompano Beach, I picked up a coconut right out of the ocean. Made me a happy camper for sure. Now I am not quite sure how to plant it to grow my very own palm tree. Do I plant it from where it grew on the tree pointed up or down? Someone told me to plant it on it's side and leave 2 inches of the shell sticking up above the soil. I'll be keeping it inside, since Ohio is mighty cold and I want it inside to see. So, can anyone help me? Thanks in advance. Sure wish I lived down there with you all!!! And I will one of these days. Hugs, Susie

Susie Q, sorry to say but the chances it will sprout for you are very low. It takes a long time and not every nut will sprout. You need to soak it in a tub of water for 3-4 days, it should float. After that it should be planted in soil with the "top" above the soil level. The top is the "top" of the nut that stayed above water while floating. If everything goes right and the the temperature is good and the luck god is on your side, the nut will slightly crack and sprout through the crack in about 3-4 months. Don't be disappointed if it doesn't work. You can always use the shell for a planter! Patty
