Surgical Statistics
So I'm feeling somewhat morbid today.
I decided I would do some research on my own about just how risky the RNY is compated to other conditions. I found some interesting statitistics and thought I'd pass them on.
Breast cancer (komen.org) - 1 in 4 women have, or will be impacted by breast cancer.
Stroke (local.strokeassociation.org) - Every 45 seconds, someone in America has a stroke.
Diabetes (according to diabetes.org) - There are 18.2 million people in the United States, or 6.3% of the population, who have diabetes.
Birth Defects (from marchofdimes.com) - One out of every 28 babies born has a birth defect.
Hysterectomy (from myomectomy.com.html) - The risk of death from hysterectomy, estimated at one to two per thousand.
Vasectomy (vascenter.com) - The chance of having a complication that needs further surgery is about 1 per 1000.
The risk of death or permanent brain injury from general anesthesia is one case in 250,000 patients. In order to keep this statistic in proper perspective compare it to other known death risks:
-- Being an astronaut: 1 in 100
-- Driving an automobile: 1 in 6,000
-- Flying in a commercial airliner: 1 in 10,000,000
(burton report.com)
C-Section (gentilebirth.org) - Maternal death rate of 59 per 100,000 women who had cesarean section versus 10 per 100,000 for women who delivered vaginally.
