First I want to say thank you to everyone for all the well wishes and prayers. A special THANK YOU to my wonderful friend and angel, Kim!! I don't know what I would do without her! I am back home but still have huge hives covering my whole body. It started Friday morning and I spent Friday night in the ER, went home Saturday and had a pretty good day. Woke up Sunday and they were back with a vengeance sending me back to the ER. I have never had problems with hives ever! At first the docs suspected Oxycodone (generic for Percocet). I had been taking one occassionally crushed with water, but on Thursday, scored one in half and swallowed the 2 halves. They thought it remained in my system to long with the pouch not being able to distribute it like it should. My question is if that was a possibility, then why did they tell me to swallow the pill? UGH!!! Anyhow, now they are leaning towards the Whey Protein. I have had very little. My hubby had made pudding and used a scoop in the batch. I had about 2 oz on Thursday and 2 oz again on Saturday when I went home. I don't know, all I know is it sucks!! I am seeing an allergist tomorrow afternoon. I just want relief from the welts and itching. I have never had any allergy problems and this is all new to me! If anyone else has ever been through this or has any remedies, please send them my way! Outside of this setback, I am feeling good and doing well. I am down 24 lbs since surgery!

Hi Kathy- So sorry about the severe hives!!! I have had hives....at about 2 weeks post op they started coming out on my side and belly, then they would dissapear...then come back at my waistline, on my forearms, etc. I am pretty sure for me it's due to an over-exposure to latex in the hospital. I still get them once in a while at my bra-line, waistband...anywhere the elastic is. They told me to make sure and let them know this for any future hospital stays. Mine are in no way comparable to the severity of yours...but at 7 months post op...they still pop up once in a while.... Nothing seemed to help them either...steroid cream, cortisone...just kinda left them alone..... Wish I could be more help. Lori 222/157/1?? laprny 1-6-04

Hi, I hightly doubt your hives are from whey unless you had a problem with whey prior to your surgery. Hives are a severe allergic reaction. It's possible it is from the medication, but not because it was in your system too long, but because you are sensitive to it. If you haven't taken that medication before, I would be calling your surgeon or the doctor that perscribed it and letting him know, so that he can order you something different. The ER docs are not as familiar with the WLS procedure that you have had. Call your surgeon and ask him about taking benadryl. That's what the hospitals give. Yes, you should see an allergist, however if you have not talked to your surgeon, do that immediatly and or talk to the Doctor that perscribed you that pain killer. I have allergies to more than enough things to know!! Good luck! Brook

Kathy I have a terrible time with hives daily. Sometimes they are idiopathic for some people and you can have them for months then they will just disappear. With me its just allergies to everything, foods, soy, peanuts, pork, presevatives like MSG and a big one for me is "aspartame" (nutrasweet) dust, trees, grass, latex Tylenol, lots of drugs, major one was the proton pumps for my reflux...Prontonix, Nexium and Prevacid, they gave me a severe rash on my next for 3 years, none of the dr's could figure it out...I did by going back to the first day I got the rash. Newest one on my list is "egg" which was in the last "anesthesia" I had on the 9th of Aug. All I could do is take Benedryl and I am becoming immune to it since I take it almost every 4 hours. I'm sure you have already tried 50mg. of Benedryl or Atarax (perscription) but there is really nothing else that seems to do anything more. I sympathize with you. If you do find something better please let me know. I can't even think about what a bad time I will have when its time for my surgery...I can't take hardly anything for pain. Hope you get to feeling better real soon.

I am sorry to hear about the hives. My husband has problem with hives because a reaction to too many antibiotics over a short period. Like everyone else says not really much helps. Benadryl does for some. They have ointment that helps. Also we found that Gold Bond makes wipes that my husband loves. He uses their powder some. Especially during the heat of the day but the wipes seem to soothe the itch. They are sold in the Eckerds Drugstores around here but probably others have them. Good luck. Carol
