help with Avatar

It seems that all of the pictures that come off my camera or that are saved on my computer are too big (pixel-wise) to get an avatar picture up.  Can anyone tell me how to reduce the file so that I am able to post a picture?

If you up load the file to something like photobucket you can resize the pic there.
