Hello OH family! I need some help....I am currently on the waiting list here in Virginia just to see the surgeon for bariatric surgery consultation. We have recently rec'd news we will be moving to the South Florida area. Due to the long wait (at the military hospital) I probably will not get in prior to the move...so I would like some information on Tricare Prime/standard in the South Florida. Has anyone had any experience with getting approved with Tricare South (humana) in South Florida? Also, I'm looking at the Cleveland Clinic....in Weston. Thanks for all of your help...I look forward to hearing from you guys!

You should have no problem getting approved through Tricare South, I think the average is about five days. As for doctors in south Florida, I am pretty sure most of the big Bariatric clinics are on Trcare's provider list. Here is a link to the provider website, you can do some research before you move: http://www.humana-military.com/. As for the difference between Prime and Standard, I would go with prime, you have to have a primary care provider, but the cost is a whole lot less than with standard.

I have to disagree with Ed.  I have standard and I love it.  It is really aggravating having to have tricare approval for every little thing.  We tried prime when it first came out.  The savings looked very appealing but at least back then and in this area -- the provider list was quite limited.  With standard I have far more providers from which to choose and I can just make an appointment and see a specialist if needed.

Thanks everyone for the replies! This will definitely help. I'm tricare prime under tricare north now and I go to the military treatment facilities(MTF) for everything. My daughter has tricare standard now and sees all civilian docs. The MTF requires the 6 months medically supervised diet which can be weigh****chers, jenny craig, or the classes offered by the nutritionists at the hospital. Does Tricare south require this as well?

I was not required the supervised diet. My surgeon only required I write a list of failed attempts, and with my comorbidities, (HBP, Diab 2, Sleep Apnea), I was approved in five days.

I have tricare prime and all I needed was a BMI over 40. No 6 month diet. 5 weeks from seminar to surgery date. You can find tricare dr's on the tricare website. You can use your past supervised diet if you have had it documented or your Dr may be able to help you on this. Mine just stated in my referral that I had been on a previous diet for at least 6 months and it failed.
Good luck.

My primary car provider gave me a referral with no 6 month diet, just documented what had failed in the past. With Dr Jawad, from the initial appointment to surgery was around two months and a week. The approval only took a week with Tricare, the main waiting time was only due to Dr Jawad being very busy, his normal wait time for surgery after approval is close to two months, but sometimes it is less and sometimes more depending on the number of patients.

Good Luck,
Ed
