Early menopause/strange menstrual cycle after surgery?
I'm two years and 150 lbs down from surgery with 50 lbs to go before I'll be satisfied. I'm at 250 now and want to be at 200 but I'm having serious issues with my body.
I'm 32 yrs old and am having a hysterectomy on the 27th of this month because around the 1 year mark it seems I went into early menopause. I have hot flashes and my cycle started coming twice a month, each lasting 7-9 days, being very heavy, with only 7-12 days between each cycle. My iron levels are atrocious because I gag at the smell of eggs and beef and pork make me vomit. I can eat chicken, but only if it's cooked well done, almost burnt or fried. So, I take two iron tablets a day, and two prenatal vitamins a day and have B-12 shots every 2 weeks. My mother had a gastric bypass 11 years ago and apparently went through the same thing so I think it may be more genetic than to do with the surgery, although the surgery may have made the menopause arrive early.
Anyway, I just wanted to ask if anyone else has experienced something similar or am I just my mother's daughter?

Tonya,
I have to admit that weird things happen to your body after weight loss surgery. Our hormones are snuggled in to our fat cells so when the fat starts going away, the hormones get released and they go crazy not having the comfort of the fat to snuggle in.
I'm sorry you're having to go thru another surgery and at such a young age. I am going to say you are your mother's daughter and with the addition of the trama of the surgery, your body just went haywire. The good news is, it can be fixed. The bad news is, it requires more surgery.
I have talked to numerous people who have had a dramatic change in their cycle after surgery but, unfortunately, you are the only one I know how has needed the additional surgery. Normally the body works its way thru it and gets straightened out.
But you'll get thru this just fine, have a speedy recovery, and be back on your feet and ready to go in no time. Youth does have its advantages in the healing department and because your mother has gone thru the very same thing, you'll have a wonderful support system. I am sorry, too, that she had to go thru all of this but God had a purpose. He wanted her to be ready to help you so she went thru it all first. Ain't He just the smartest thing? Oh, I question His decisions sometime but what kind never does that with a parent?
Good luck to you. Hang in there.....the best is yet to be.
