Have you gotten recommendations for the meniscus from orthopedists? I got 3 for mine (cut, cut, there's nothing wrong with you). I opted to pretend there is nothing wrong with me and the pain went away -- I can still tweak mine and have a pinch, but I (so far) have little lasting impact from the tear (medial mensical tear).
I walk/jog/run(pfft...run) and do jumping jacks/stairs/etc. I limit squats to 10 reps a day, body weight only as they give me the willies.
Ask your centre. We aren't to lift anything heavier than 10 pounds for a long time. No working our core for 4-6 months! However I got the go ahead to work isolated muscles and run 6 weeks out. I did have to promise to take it slow. I think they also take it person by person a bit too. If you were active before they are more likely to let you go back to previous activities. But if you never did more than short walks they might want you to wait a bit longer.
