Gym Rat or home body?
So I was wondering if anyone could tell me if they think we tend to be more successful for continued exercise if we are gym rats or just walk the neighborhood. I am trying to lose my 122 lbs of regain and finally make it to my goal weight of 185 and I was wondering if I truly could gain inspiration from others at the gym while I workout. Thanks in advance... I'm just curious. I know that there are more options for workouts in the gym.
I think it depends on what you like to do the most. I don't think it matters if you are in a gym or in your home, it just matters if you actually move your body. I do crossfit, and I can't tell you how intimidated I still get by some of the olympic lifts or some of the gymnastic moves they do (handstand pushups anyone?). The nice thing about going to a gym like this, is that everything is scaleable to your ability and most are so welcoming and accepting that it makes a huge difference. That being said, there is something about going out for a walk or run and just think on my own.
What do you enjoy? Are you competitive? Answer these questions and I think you have your answer.
Good luck!
I had a friend who went there and was very encouraging. Honestly, I find people who do crossfit some of the most accepting and supportive I have ever found in a work out environment. Possibly because everything is so scaleable but mostly I think no one can come in do some of the moves right away either! Most people start working out terribly out of shape so they know what it is like and will probably just appreciate the effort you are putting into your health. :-)
I personally like the gym. I do walk the neighborhood too, but the gym is a regular habit for me, driving to the gym makes me work out even when I do not feel like it, the neighborhood on the other hand competes too much with Netflix and Hulu.
I don't think it really matters, so long as you find something you enjoy. For some, going to the gym and getting to know some people there, or bringing a friend provides the accountability they need to keep going, same with joining a team, or group activities . That doesn't really work for me. I have to do it, because I want to do it. But I do post my weekly exercise routine here now,and for some reason, it works. Maybe it's because I committed to it publicly, or because it forces me to think through my week and plan properly. Or, it is just because I'm actively losing, and ending on that momentum. With regard to my routine, I'm a bit of a hybrid. Lately, I do go to the gym 3-4 times a week for group strength type classes, and sometimes cardio. But I also have a treadmill at home, and do yoga at home. And I'm also open to trying anything at least once.

Any movement is useful. But diet is 90% of weight loss. So to lose your regain, you really need to be focusing on diet, not exercise.
For non-weight loss purposes, i.e., just general overall health, I do a combination of running, yoga, pilates, and tai chi. I've gone through periods of lifting weights as well, but right now it doesn't fit into my life, sadly.
