I don't like working out and have torn meniscus
Hi All-
I am a newbie. Had my first consult with my surgeon yesterday. Because of my insurance, my WLS will not be for at least six months. I HATE exercise. Walking I am okay with. A little weight lifting that is okay too. I have a recently torn meniscus so I am limited as to what I can do. But I feel I have to do something. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Just starting this journey to a new me. Finally not dreading the future.
I hate to be that guy, but I feel like if you want to be successful, you need to change your attitude towards exercise. So many studies indicate that physical activity is key in maintaining weightloss (I know, there are always exceptions). It has to become part of your life, like brushing your teeth, or grocery shopping and cooking.
If walking is fine, build on that. If you find it boring, Listen to a podcast or music or audiobook. Podcasts are my lifesaver.
You can't be expected to like everything you try, but what's important is to find something fun. I tried team sports for a long time. I finally accepted that they aren't my thing. So I took swimming lessons. And joined a Y. Today I'm trying a group strength class for the first time. I also progressed from walking to running intervals. Slowly. I call it wogging. And I love yoga.
When you're starting out, it can be hard to see the pleasure, but once you start improving, you'll want to keep going because it is so validating.
Try making a list of things you might like to try. You don't have to stick to one thing.
good luck!

Not only do you feel good after, soon, it will bum you out if you don't do it (whatever activity you land on). I was thinking, and another thing that might help the first few times, is to bring someone with you. At least until you are comfortable in a new environment.

I've found that most people who hate exercise just haven't found the right exercise.
Are you seeing a physical therapist for your knee? I'd recommend that and getting advice about ALL the exercises you can try. Then.. try them all :)

Words have specific meanings for people. Stop thinking about exercise. It clearly has unpleasant connotations for you. Think about increasing activity instead.
If you like walking, walk more. I have a Fitbit, and it help me a lot. It counts steps, and it keeps track of how many minutes I am active each day. Staying active for 5 hours each day is much more beneficial than working hard at the gym for an hour, then sitting on your butt the rest of the day.
Be active. Walk. Take stairs instwad of elevators. Park farther away from stores, and walk extra aisles. Everything counts.
Do what you can, and as you get in better shape, challenge yourself to do a little more.

I have lost 122# and maintained the loss for 7 years with no exercise
Have you gotten recommendations for the meniscus from orthopedists? I got 3 for mine (cut, cut, there's nothing wrong with you). I opted to pretend there is nothing wrong with me and the pain went away -- I can still tweak mine and have a pinch, but I (so far) have little lasting impact from the tear (medial mensical tear).
I walk/jog/run(pfft...run) and do jumping jacks/stairs/etc. I limit squats to 10 reps a day, body weight only as they give me the willies.
Yes..had MRI and Orhto surgeon is being conservative and doesn't want to operate yet. Got fluid drained from the knee and Cortisone shot. That has helped for now. But sometimes still painful. There was a time prior to drain/shot that I literally couldn't walk more than two or three steps.
