New and need help
I'll tell you my routine: it's a combo of cardio& strength that I love and has given me great results.
Cardio: I run 4 miles twice a week, usually weekend mornings since it's getting dark early now. I also do 50 minutes of cardio 2 nights a week at the gym. The 50 minutes are broken up among different cardio machines: elliptical, stepper, bike & circuit training and treadmill.
Strength: I do twice a week after my 50 cardio minutes. circuit training includes weights- so that usually covers me for one night, and is full body. On the second night I focus on machines that aren't included in the circuit and I rotate between upper and lower body. I do 2 sets, 15 reps per machine.
Good luck finding a combination that works for you.

I have a torn meniscus in my knee. I also have a weak shoulder. I think I have damaged the rotator cup but haven't been diagnosed.
That said I go to planet fitness 3 to 4 times a week. There are certain machines my knee can not handle. Most of the leg curls, glutes machines.
I do 30 minutes weights, then 30 minutes on recumbant bike. I started at 2.5 miles in 30 minutes, up to 5 miles in 35 minutes now.
This is my workout.. Each month I added 1 set of 20 reps. I am at 20 reps/4 sets now. Goal is 20reps/5 sets or 100 total reps each machine, then I will start increasing weight as my knee tolerates it
abdominal machine - started at 30 lbs/20reps/2sets.
torso rotation - 20lbs/20reps/2sets
back extensions - 30lbs/ 20 reps/2sets
ab coaster - 25reps front/left/right
hip abductor inner 30lb/20reps/2sets
hip abductor outer 30lb/20reps/2sets
leg press - 40lbs/20reps/2sets
then bike
arm day: arm extension, arm curls, overhead press, row, rear delt... All of these are about 10lbs/10 reps/ mostly I can only do 1 set, working on doing it twice
Hi. I know this will sound funny, but I'd done the gym thing, the walking thing, the class thing and nothing worked. Two years ago I tried bikram yoga (hot yoga). I'd never done yoga and was over 260 pounds when I started and something about it just clicked with me. It has cardio, strength training, and a calming effect on the mind, and it's always a beginner course.
There are many husband/wife teams that practice at my studio. It's a 90 minute class that you would want to do 3-4 times/week. You wouldn't need to do any other exercise if you didn't want to. 6 months after my revision surgery from lap band to RNY my doctor and nutritionist said I had to add cardio into my routine. I didn't because I just don't want to and I really get my heart rate up while doing yoga. At my one year check-up I had lost 95 pounds and no one said I had to do anything other than yoga! I feel strong and know I'm giving my body a chance at feeling good while I age. Strong back, good balance.
Best of luck with whatever you choose - I truly hope you enjoy it!
