I signed up for a 1/2 marathon(Alamo 13.1) that is coming up on next Sunday.  I was doing well training, I was putting in 30-35 mile weeks with an average run of 7 miles.

On January 4th, my mom had a surgery consult to remove her stomach as she had been battling stomach cancer for 2 years.  They finally had shrunk it so surgery was an option.  At the consult, they found she was seriously anemic and an endoscopy revealed the tumor was bleeding.  She started getting transfusions.

All was progressing fine.  She was approved for surgery and then she had a major stroke on January 12th.  She had been on blood thinners to prevent clots/strokes but they had to stop them because of the bleeding. A week later, the decision to move her to a hospice was made.  They figured she had about a week to live.  But, she proved them wrong.  The bleeding slowed but the cancer finally got her on February 20th.

I live in San Antonio and she was being treated at MD Anderson in Houston.  Between work and making the drive to Houston to be with her, training fell by the side.  And of course eating increased.  I put on 15 lbs in two months.

This is also end of year for me.  I am an accountant and I am in charge of the audit for our company.  I was working 11 to 12 hour days until last for the last two weeks including the previous weekend.

I figured there was no way I could run the 1/2.  But today, I got back to training.  I managed 6.5 miles at an average pace of 15 1/2 minutes.  Slow, but I did not push myself.  I kept my heart rate below 155.

I have decided to try for the 1/2.  They have a 4 hour limit and I am pretty sure I can do it in 3.5 hours.  I am going to put in some miles this week and see how it goes.

I got back on track with my eating plan yesterday.  I miss my mom but regressing in my weight and fitness is not going to bring her back.  She was very proud of my results and I cannot let her down.

Today was a rough day.  Tried to run 4 miles but ended up walking most of it.  Legs and feet are sore.  I am going to take tomorrow off and then try 8 miles on Thursday.  If I can do that in under 2:15 then I will go for it on Sunday.

Well, today did not go all that well.  I did worse than Monday at 6 miles.  Probably because it was almost 10 degrees warmer this morning(68 vs 60).  I knew at the 3 mile mark that I was not going to be able to do 8 miles within a reasonable time.

The good news is I am back moving.  To me, that is more important than missing this race, although I wont get the cool finish medal.

I am back to my MAF training and when I get my 8 mile time at MAF below 2 hours, I will schedule a 1/2.
