Exercise on 600-800 calories a day?
I'm just shy of 2 years post op and have a rigorous exercise schedule (I kickbox 3x/week, run 2-3x/week and lift weights 2x/week). For the first year and a half I kept my calories 800 or under and didn't have a problem with energy levels or working out on decreased calories. I've recently started increasing my calories, working closely with my Dr. and Nut (who are aware of my exercise level) and really haven't noticed a difference in my energy level. I agree that timing of your food intake and hydration is more important than calorie intake. I will say on days where my activity is at its peak (either a run longer than 6 miles or when I do a combination of activities (run and weight class/weight class and kick boxing) I do try to increase my calories a bit, especially right after my exercise to help my body recover, but I don't go crazy and keep my food intake protein forward and serving sizes appropriate.
So on the VSG board there is some talk back and for with what the Nut suggest eating vs what people who've gotten down to their goal weight are eating. Generally speaking the Nuts often state eat 1000-1200 calories a day but the veterans suggest 600-800. So for those working out or being active at those two numbers, is getting exercise in an issue?
I ask because i'm on my preop plan right now and went for a 35min brisk walk and am really tired from that. I've been eating about 1000 calories a day for the last 4 days, so my body is just getting used to this so that's more likely the issue for my fatigue. But it made me think about in the future, how many calories are people who are active eating while actively trying to loose weight after VSG or RNY?
your body is burning your stored fat for energy. That is what it is stored for. Burning it is how weight loss happens.
Your body will burn exactly the amount you need for energy regardless of how many calories you eat.
Mid you eat more calories than your body needs it will store thevextravandvwont burn any stored and there will be no weight loss.
depending on my diet plan and goals for the exercise plan I am on, my diet varies between 2400 and 3800 calories a day.. I cant understand how anybody can eat 800 calories anymore past 1.5 years out.. If you are exercising, and legitimately pushing yourself, and you know your body, you can do many things.
The body will not many make changes at 800 calories; nor 1000 calories.. That is not an intake to be maintained forever
just sayin
By the time you get close to your goal wt, you will have a good idea what the cal goals will be for you longterm. As you know, it is different for everyone. I am at 13% body fat and that extra muscle burns 100-200 more cal a day over someone at my weight but at a higher body fat.
How tired you feel after excersing when you are obese is nothing like how you will feel after excersing when you get to a much lower weight. It will be so much better when you are thinner - stamina better, recovery shorter, etc.
My NUIT says 1000-1200 cals to maintain AT THE MAX. But remember your body on 1000 cal a day pre WLS is nothing like 1000 cal a day opts WLS. It is so much easier to stay within 1000-1200 cal a day after WLS. That is why we are having the surgery.
Good Luck.

When you answered this I'd just had surgery and missed your response. I was going back over this info now that I'm 6 weeks out. I've started work outs with a small 4 person group and a personal trainer. I did find on work out days I'm going to have to get some carbs/food in me. I've been on a very low carb food plan and that's been fine while at my very low-key sit around job. However i think she was out to kill me last night and I didn't have enough gusto to go. My doc last week told me to try eating some nuts before heading to my work outs so I'd have some free carbs running around but not over kill my personal goals for keeping carbs in check (they were my demon). The doc also suggested on those days to move my calories up from 800 calories to something about 900-1k.
Have you found any foods that you like to time before heading out for a work out?

The cake is a lie, but Starbucks is not.
nuts are the best something that does not taste like a shake i think my body does not digest them well bc i see pieces in TMI toilet.
Being dehydrated only a cup or two can sow up as fatigue - make sure you are suprt hydrated BEFORE exercising When all you can do is sip sip sip it takes a long time to replenish that fluid.
Sounds like you r doing great!!!!
