Exercise on 600-800 calories a day?
So on the VSG board there is some talk back and for with what the Nut suggest eating vs what people who've gotten down to their goal weight are eating. Generally speaking the Nuts often state eat 1000-1200 calories a day but the veterans suggest 600-800. So for those working out or being active at those two numbers, is getting exercise in an issue?
I ask because i'm on my preop plan right now and went for a 35min brisk walk and am really tired from that. I've been eating about 1000 calories a day for the last 4 days, so my body is just getting used to this so that's more likely the issue for my fatigue. But it made me think about in the future, how many calories are people who are active eating while actively trying to loose weight after VSG or RNY?

The cake is a lie, but Starbucks is not.
I am almost 10 months post-op and average about 850 calories daily. I do workout 5-6 days a week sometimes 2 times a days (Doing BodyPump and UJam back to back or weight lifting and then a cardio or swimming) and I have absolutely no problems with it.
This isn't about you eating to get energy to exercise. This is about body conditioning. No amount of food with make you be able to run a 5K, but slowly increasing your activity will. It takes some time, but it will become easier.
So you did 35 minutes of walking (which is GREAT! by the way). So the next time add 3 minutes.... and then another 3 minutes... and then add another 5 minutes... As long as you do better than the day before, you've accomplished a new goal.

Thank you this is just the answer I was hoping for. I've been in my past an active person (for a big person) and this year I'm turning 40 and I have really felt the pain of getting older and being this overweight. I would like to get this fat suit off me so I can return to a normal way of life and I am glad it can be done with that few of calories. I honestly think yesterday was mostly due to last week I was eating like like a big person and this week I'm eating to not be and it's a lot for my body to switch gears in a few days. Looks like from your report you're proof that it will.

I have the same concerns. I wonder if it is because at such high weights, we are so tired.
I was very active pre-op and I often had to eat almost 3k calories to have enough energy not to feel exhausted all of the time. I am hoping as the weight comes off, the calories that I am consuming post-op will leave me with enough energy to exercise like I have always wanted to. Exercise is life to me.
Three-hour long bike rides by the river on the weekend and 1hour+ during the weekday keep me feeling on top of the world. I also LOVE weight lifting and was doing that for an hour three times a week with a trainer.
I can't imagine being able to do that much activity on 600-800 calories a day. Perhaps I might have to face not being able to do so much activity? I don't know. I'll see when I get there I guess.
If it's the decision between sacrificing a little activity and being a healthy weight, I will choose the healthy weight. It's why I did this.
I'm only 3 days post-op, so I've got a long way to go.
I have heard of people who got the surgery at the hospital I got mine at going on to do Iron Man competitions and such post-op. I'm hopeful that it will all work out.
That's great news to hear. I'm really looking forward to my 5ks being under 50mins. While I'm proud of myself at my weight for getting out there and doing it, it's kinda a big deal. Meanwhile my 5k friends are running and coming in 30-35mins and while I don't dream of running it'd be nice to be able to jog one. I look forward to hearing from others who are exercising what their eating.

It's possible to be extremely active while on a very low calorie diet. Better hydration is more important than additional food. You've got plenty of energy stored up, and you want to use that first.
You've gone the heavy exercise route, and you've still gained enough weight to qualify for surgery. Exercise is great for many things, but as you've seen, it does squat for weight loss. No pun intended.
So, if you really want to get rid of your excess weight, do whatever you need to do, even if it means cutting back on the exercise a little. If exercise is more important, and you end up eating more, you won't lose as much. Only you can decide which you'd rather have.

I'm a big believer in driving for 10k steps per day, even though I seldom achieve it. I do hit it a couple of times a week, and monitor daily with MyFitNessPal on iPhone.
By the way, just simple walking is fine, including wandering around Costco, the park, whatever. When I walked, or biked, somethings used treadmill I would lose more.
At 6 months post op, I was eating about 1500 calories a day and still losing 5 to 7lbs a month. At 15 months post op, I eat about 2,200 calories a day to maintain weight, and get moderate exercise a few days a week. I'm starting strength training Tues.
In the end, I lost 140lbs and I'm below my goal weight now but pretty much stable. My experience has been the quality of your food choices after you've lost the weight are more important. Eg less carbs and sugar, more protein and water.
Lastly, make sure your getting enough iron every day. If your not, you'll like be fatigued.
Thanks for the insightful post. I'm really looking forward to getting fit and active. Your post really gives me hope that it's going to be just fine and well possible.

I've never had a problem maintaining my fitness schedule on 600-800 calories a day. I just have to schedule my meals accordingly.
