Finished my First Half-Ironman!

I did my first sprint three months post RNY. LOL I almost died! I did pass out at the end. Just didn't have the reserves to consume the water at that point.

Thanks! Just trying to decide what IronMan to do now!

Congratulations!  What an accomplishment!

I would be interested in what you learn about nutrition for the "Bariathlete."  I have pretty significant problems with that, I have not yet found any normal "fuel" that doesn't make me immediately dump!  If I try Powerade or more than about a fingerful of GU, there had better be a porta-potty close by or I will truly regret it.  My last half-marathon, I accidentally picked up Powerade at the water stop instead of water and thought, okay I'm five miles in, I could use the calories.  I almost didn't make it thru the porta-potty line!!  And added at least 8 minutes to my finish time  :-( .

I have not actually tried GU gels but I have read their nutritional info and they do not have a lot of sugar and their carbohydrates are from a complex source so what you may be experiencing is gastric distress rather than dumping.  I experience gastric distress with almonds a lot; hard for my body to digest.  I read in Hammer Nutrition magazine about one of their ambassadors.  She is a Canadian post gastric bypass ironman who uses Hammer Nutrition products to fuel her racing and her training.  I've tried several of their products such as HEED and Recoverite and they were fine for me. I have not, yet, however, tried their gels or anything for mid-run fueling.  Something to look into, however...

Ohhh. I don't really have nutritional issues that make me head to the porta-potty after nutrition. I have read that you can use real food. I am able to have GU (worked myself up to it). At this point in my "career" (funny new term for me) I try to eat like a normal person, as much as I can. I eat half a bagel with peanut butter before the race (1/2 an hour), and then I GU once an hour after that. I will be needing to take salts next time, as I cramped and had a lot of pain because I sweat so much (as everyone does). I can do G2 without issues. Maybe you don't need GU? Can you have a handful of beans instead, or cookies? I'm ok with both of those. I've heard many RNYers unable to do the GU.

What a great accomplishment!  I know all of the discipline and work that went into training for it and the high of actually completing it.  My hat is off to you!

B****on of people with RnY do Ironmans all the time. Sugar during exercise is not the same as sugar while not exercising and they don't dump on gels and bars and shots and blocks. During exercise, our digestive system shuts down a bit and goes very slow, so the chances of dumping go way down.

Oh...I don't really dump on GUs and such. It's more of being able to get enough food in during the (most-likely) 15 plus hours of exercise I will be doing that day. I find that I don't have too much restriction issues, but I do wonder just how much I can get in, while exercising. It will be bits at a time.....all the time i'm guessing. It's more than GU and beans for this event. People pack sandwiches and what-not. It will be quite the experience anyhow. Got the go-ahead from my NUT.

Do you know any of the RNYers who have done the full IM personally? Can you direct me to them, so I can get their advice? Thanks!
