cold weather running

I live on the coast of Southern Texas.  People start wearing boots and jackets when the temp**** 75 here. We are traveling to OKlahoma for Thanksgiving.  I signed up for a Turkey Trot Thanksgiving morning.  I am not sure of the weather yet but am anticipating much cooler weather.  Any tips for running in colder weather.  I may have one or two days to get used to the temps.  I am mostly concerned about breathing in the colder air.  I know many suggest layering, but what do you do with the extra layer when you start to get hot?  Should I just start out with fewer layers?

Thanks.  I know this may seem like silly questions, but I have never run in cold weather.

1st..Congrats on doing a run on Tday, great way to work off some of the meal later in the day. In terms of cold weather running, I run in it often. I have found wearing layers is key. Specifcally outer layer jacket you can take off and tie around your waist if you get too warm.  In any event, best of luck!

Thanks.  It is supposed to be in the 80's here today and Oklahoma has forecast snow on Friday.  I will have a few days to get used to the change, but it will still be a shock to my body.  I think once I start running I will be fine.

Thank you.  I splurged and bought some cold weather gear and layered it on.  The run was fine, but waiting around for it to start was killer.

Echoing what Bill said, having a jacket that you can tie around your waist is good.... My hands & feet tend to get colder than my core, so I keep a layer (or two) of gloves and even use Hot Tamales handwarmers between the gloves. Keeping your extremities warm (hands, feet, head) can do surprising wonders at keeping the rest of you warm, and sometimes those layers are easier to shed or pocket than a flopping jacket...

Thanks.  The handwarmers were a lifesaver.  I was able to toss them after the first mile.  My husband was actually passing his out to the other runners before hand.  Such a gentleman.  Once I started I was fine.  It was the waiting around before hand that got me.
