Running a Marathon after RNY

Was anyone told that we physically cannot/should not do a full marathon? I know many have done a full, but just wondering if any WLS professional advises against it and why.

Surgery March 23/2011. Completed three full marathons and two half marathons, two half Ironman distances. Completed my first Full Ironman distance (4 km swim, 180 km bike, 42.2 km (full marathon) run) in Muskoka August 30/2015. Next Ironman Lake Placid July 23/2017!

There have been a bunch of people who have done Marathon's, Half Marathons and other endurance events including ultra marathons.  My surgeon almost insisted that I run one.  I did 4 including 2 Goofy Challanges.  You are going to need to eat carbs and make sure that you drink a lot.  I have had kidney stones and nobody will say it but I really feel like it's at least partially RNY related.  Also, many people report that they gain weight while marathon training.  If it's something you want to do, you can!!!

Oh, I am. I was just told by someone else that their surgeon said it wouldn't be possible. I ran a 1/2, and at the end I thought, "Yep, I could keep going" so i'm training for my first full.

VSG on 12/17/13

I haven't had surgery yet, but I've previously been a 1/2 marathoner since 2010.  I'm planning on VSG soon, and I know we will have a bit different dietary needs, but I'm wondering how you carb load prior to an endurance event?? Did you gain the same benefit from carb loading as anyone else would?? I know my experience with VSG will probably be a little different but I'm curious of your experience.

Thanks!!!

Never was advised against it.... not sure why a professional would discourage us from any type of physical activity! I'm training for my first full and have done 3 halfs to date. NUT gave me clear advice on sports nutrition & RNY - how to calculate how many carbs I need for recovery & not bonking, etc.

This is something i've never received. My clinic is new(ish) 2009, and i'm not sure they have many people who train hard.

The half was easy for nutrition. A full i'm trying to figure out. I have until October to test drive everything :-)

I was told by an orthopedic doctor not to run because of my hip replacement. So I went for a second opinion and was told it was ok but to try to limit high impact physical activities.

I have only ran one, and probably stay doing half marathons.

A couple of our Ontario Centre's have some interesting views on things. I know my GP is always after my information I get from my surgeon in the US, as it is in more detail than the information he gets from the Centre's. I have done two triathlons this summer with two more on the way. I am also thinking on an adventure race to round it off. If you desire the marathon do it. I set time goals and I have been able to blow them out of the water. For a marathon, I know a lot of people have the "Oprah Goal", where as they beat her time of her marathon which was 4:29:15. The only activity I been advised against was hockey, but I willing to try that again as well.

The person who was suggested it's not possible for post-rnyers is from the states. Someone at Barix, I believe.

I had no idea that Oprah did a marathon. My goal is 4:30....but that sounds like a fun goal to beat. I've done a few triathlons, and a half-marathon. But it's the full and being able to sustain and function with our re-arranged guts is the question I guess. My own NUT knows i'm training.

Why were you advised against hockey?

Because of the contact, even in no contact, to the abdomen area, or as his nurse says he does not like the game.
