Doing my first 1/2 Marathon on Sunday and tummy issues with gels

Good to know!! I drink water every 10 minutes, and take half a gel at 40 minutes (but yes no water at that time). Is that the problem? It has only happened like that since my gall bladder attack. I was fine when I did 20k a few weeks ago, but the attack was after that.

I plan on having fun!! Thanks for the encouragement. Wow, three marathons!! I'm doing a full in the fall. Eek!

Good luck on the upcoming 1/2 and your full in the fall! I'm doing my first full this October and my 3rd half on June 1st. Anyhoo... I echo the water+GU, as they tend to give me GI discomfort if I neglect the water - - especially the ones with caffiene!! Also, for preemptive suggestion, chew GasX before your run and carry one with you during. I am a GasX addict and rarely run without it - makes life quite a bit easier when not worrying about sharting myself....

I second water with the gel.  You also don't heve to down it all at once.  Take a little at a time.  Good luck.

Water + Gel thumbs up.

I mix mine in my sports bottle.  Some of the packages even tell you to take them with water.

At first I couldn't take one without it upsetting my stomach.  Now I can, but it was only through conditioning and starting with watered down versions.

On long bike rides, I'll squirt a couple ounces of gel into a water bottle and shake it up until it is mixed.

When I'm riding or running I prefer my calories that way.  Solid food just sits like a rock in my stomach.

If I am going to take in food, I usually take it early on the bike, solid foods seem to be harder toward the end of a hard workout than the beginning.
