Running shoes
I would recommend going to a running shoe specialty store. They will be able to fit you properly and I can guarantee that you will leave feeling like you are walking on a cloud. Don't be surprised to pay $100+ for a good pair of shoes. After you figure out what type of shoes work well for you, you will be able you will be able to find some deals. Some popular running shoe brands are New Balance, Asics, Brooks, Saucony, Avia and there are others.

4 full's - 14 halves - 2 goofy's and one Mt. Washington!
I finally broke down and went to a running store. I was fitted and walked out with a pair of shoes for $150. I thought there would be an up charge for fittings. Came home and checked online and found the same shoes for the same cost.
Well worth it in my opinion.

I agree with the others - there's no blanket recommendation when it comes to brand/type; it's all about what fits you! Specialists are looking at your stride, if you pronate, if you have any hot spots of where you put pressure on your feet both standing and moving....
Here's a tip on saving money: AFTER you've had success with a shoe for a few months (and you bought it at a specialty store after being fitted and scanned and videoed to be sure it's the right shoe for you), buy your next pair of the same exact shoe online. eBay, Amazon, even discount stores will often have prices a good bit lower than the running stores. e.g. I run in Addidas adizero aegis and have spent $125 (each time) on the past 2 pairs but recently bought my 3rd pair of the exact same shoe for $85 on eBay!
