I ran 4 miles. 4 miles full of it being too cold, then too windy, the top of my foot hurting and my ankle bleeding (nicked it shaving a couple days ago and my shoe rubbed it) and then being too hot. It's the taper, right?!?! Please let it be the taper!

I'm half @$$ tapering for my first half marathon 3/17 which goes along with following the training schedule half @$$ since I never seemed to do what I was supposed to except for the long run days (which I got in). Self doubt is in overdrive, with all kinds of crazy thoughts going on. Examples .... Can I run that early in the morning (6:40 a.m. start time)? Can I run that flat (yes -this one is stupid, I know but I do like the break that the downhills give me)?

Michelle - you can do it!! And please, do taper! I didn't follow a taper for my first Half and I think that's what contributed to the subungual hematoma...and major case of lead-legs at mile 11!  You're gonna finish - once you're there, you'll know you ARE gonna do it.... but you get to decide HOW you're gonna do it! Put aside the things that are out of your control (weather, course, other people) and focus on what you can ( your hydration, nutrition, form, breathing....)

I ran 1 mile. Almost doesn't count, but I was fresh off my dentist's chair and trying to squeeze in a run before clients. OMG this temporary crown hurts like hell!!! And probably going to stick to liquids/pureeds until I can get the permanent crown on the 21st. Which having my Half on the 16th, is going to make nutrition a sticky-whicket.....

Thank you Nicole! Reassurance from somebody who has been there, done that is exactly what I need at this point. My husband just looks at me like I'm nuts.

I'm sure all of us racing that weekend will be fine. Hopefully the crown will settle down and you can figure out something nutrition-wise that will work.

Hi,

I decided to skip my training today. I was supposed to do a 6 mile run for my 1st 1/2 on 3/17 but just could not. I felt bad as I have not missed any of my training up to this point, will just continue with it tomorrow.

Just wanted to say appreciate the posts above as I too am getting nervous about the half, but the comments above were very helpful.

Best,

Bill Mac

Of course I'm not a pro trainer, so take my opinion with a grain of salt, but I don't think skipping a workout during taper is a bad thing. We always get told that the taper is mentally the hardest part: you're already trained up, ready to go, and it doesn't logically make sense to do LESS but it's what you gotta do for your body to reduce injury risk! You got this!!!

Yep!  I read something that said no gains are made within 10 days of an event, so anything done during that time period should be "smart," nothing strenuous, just keeping things loose and your mind from going crazy. No harm done with skipping one, you've put the rest of the work in!

We all are going to rock next weekend!

Hi guys-loved your responses. I am very happy I did not run yesterday as physically I feel better today than I have for a while. I will finish up training as outlined on Cool running website as I like to finish what I start.

One other question. The race is on 3/17 at 11:00am. What should I eat prior to the race and when?

Lastly, I am CONFIDENT we will all do great in our races on that weekend, we all have overcome so much already!!!
