RNY on 01/28/14 with

Thanks for the referral to your blog.  I am surprised to find someone else who is running inspite of knee issues!  (especially a fellow RNYer)  Can you tell me how long you've been treating your knee and if you do anything special for races?  My knee is bone on bone and it looks like a partial replacement is in my future but I am signed up for two 1/2s in the next 6 months that I really want to complete.  I just had my first cortisone injection 2 weeks ago and I wasn't able to get past mile 4 (we were up to 10mi in our training runs before I decided to get the knee looked at.)  My new brace arrived this week and my first 4 miles today were great but I didn't want to pu**** so I shut it down early.  I am waiting for approval orthovisc injections.  I guess I'm just trying to get some advice from someone who has travelled this road already.  Any advice would be welcome.

During runs, I have powdered G2 (so I can water it down or make it more concentrated, depending on the length of my run). I also dump but my threshold is pretty high for just sugars and I find that if I'm consuming sugars WHILE running, I actually don't dump. However, if I ate the same sugars while not running, would dump. Go figure.... So, on runs >10mi, I do 1 GU at about mile 6-7. On runs >15 mile, GU at mile 7 and again at mile 12. Watch out for the GUs with caffeine, as they can make you poo!

Ironman Perform gives me explosive diarrhea! (I know, TMI)

Anyway, I don't have bypass but I wanted to mention that I have been working on consuming less and less when I work out and I can now go 90 minutes with nothing bu****er and often not much of that. I think if you eat well before and after and really fuel your body and get used to working out without consuming a lot of calories, it can work really well. Before I was constantly eating trying to train my body to consume as many calories as possible without getting sick and I don't think that works as well.
