ammonia smell

Hi All, Whenever I work out my sweat smells like ammonia sometimes it gets pretty strong. I know it is an ketone carb issue but no matter how I try to change things it still happens. I eat a good amount of carbs probably too much so no way I am deficient. When I was about 6-8 months post op (I am 2 1/2 years out now) I was told based on the amount of exercise (I walk 2 1/2 hours with hills a day 5 days a week and 30 minutes every night)) and my age that I should be eating 120 grams of protein a day I probably get 80 - 100 a day. My question is I can live with the smell but am concerned about any harmful effects. Does anyone know if this is problematic in the long term?

I'll be interested in others' opinions of harm/concerns but I've noticed the same thing when I do long runs & sweat a lot. All I could say is make sure you're staying hydrated; I drink so much water normally & even more when I run, that I'm probably turning into a fish...

The issue is that you are burning protein as your fuel source.  Not good. ...

The real answer is in the knowledge of how and what your body uses for fuel.  At different intensities your body will use different fuel sources but none of them should come from protein as this is mainly your lean muscle mass.  The cure is simple to change your diet to properly fuel your workout sessions.  Yes this means adding carbs! some maybe not a lot, and it doesn't have to be breads and pastas and potatos.   A healthy diet of Fruits, Veggies and lean dense protein will take you far in getting a way from this.

For me my Plate is about 60 percent carbs in the source of Veggies and fruits Typically salads with a meal.  My snacks are sometimes closer to 50/50  but are typically Fruits and Cheeses, Yogurts and fruits meats and cheese.  I have changed my diet and training and am finiding that I actually have more energy than I believed I would based on my daily diet.  I still don't eat High Calorie but I eat quality.

It will take a bit of time to rectify the situation as your body is used to processing protein now, so you need to train it to change again.

Thanks Paul. I "knew" fruits and veggies have carbs but never thought of it in this context.
