Hi. I am a 58 yr old woman scheduled for RNY in mid December. I have been a couch potato for years and have recently started walking every day for the past few weeks.. Yesterday, I was so very proud of myself went to the local high school track. 1.35 miles later I thought I would die.  I got home and had to sleep for 2 hours.!!  What???!!  I was so upset! someone suggested that I get one of the incentive spirometer to increase my lung power. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Just keep walking - you will get stronger, it will get easier. There was a point a couple years ago I couldn't walk 1/2 mile and now Ive run 1/2 marathon. Make sure to stay consistent, set some goals, and stay positive :)   Congrats on scheduling your surgery.

Great job getting started now!  Maybe start at 1 mile, 3 times a week? do some very light weight training 2 days a week.  It will come, just don't push so hard you resent the exercise. It can be an awesome amount of fun!

You will be so glad you added exercise before your surgery!  It made my recovery a breeze!

When I started, I was 324 lbs.  I couldn't walk from the driveway into the house without getting winded!  Now I can run a few miles before I even notice it.  I started with walking.  And crying, because it hurt so bad.  After a few weeks, I added some Nautilus weights.  Over time, it got easier, and I got stronger.

Hang in there! We all had to crawl (and cry) before we ran races!  YOU CAN DO IT.

Congrats, just keep on moving, that's all it takes.

Be easy on yourself, if 1.35 was too much take a little bit off.  Try for 1 mile until you can do that without being tired.  You can always add more as  you feel stronger.

Keep up the great work.

Ditto, all of the above. Do what you can and good for you starting before the surgery. After surgery keep on walking. You won't be able to run or anything too stressful for exercise, but walking is highly recommended and will help you in both the short and long term.

Good job!!!
