Eating before early AM workouts?

I finally feel ready to start working out.

I have lots of workout DVDs that I've used in the past (Turbo Jam, Turbo Fire, Insanity, P90, P90X, Zumba...) and I will continue using them since joining a local gym isn't in my budget now.

Now, I plan on working out at 5am but my problem is what can I eat beforehand?

Before WLS, I would just workout without eating but since I'm eating so little as it is now (and some of the workouts are high intensity), I'm afraid my blood sugar will plummit and I'll get sick.

Does anyone else workout very early in the morning? If so, do you eat something small and then wait before you workout? Or do you not eat?

Thanks.

Dr. Oz suggest not eating before early morning workouts. His illustration was using two hot plates. One he put butter(representing fat) down on the hot plate directly and you watch it melt quickly. Then he put a piece of bread (representing breakfast) down on the other hot plate then put the butter on top of that. Obviosly the message is that if you eat before you work out you have to burn at least some of the calories and carbohydrates before you start on the fat.  Hope this helps.

I run often early in the morning and wait at least 45min if I eat a whole breakfast before running. More often than not, I'll do a protein shake or protein coffee before running, then eating after my run. I have done exercise before eating and can do it if I'm doing a short run (20min or less) but longer burns require a bit of energy in my system...

Some people really like Click brand, which is protein powder with coffee in it, but I prefer a DIY approach: warmed unsweetened almond milk, shot of decaf espresso, sugar-free flavorings, Splenda, and vanilla or chocolate protein powder (tempered SLOWLY to avoid clumping) et voila you have protein hot coffee, worthy of Starbucks but with way more protein!

I dont eat before my early morning runs...I cannt workout with solids in my system. And as long as my overall nutrition is okay, I have enough in the tank to get me through.

Unless you are training hard for something specific and going to be working out for more than an hour, and are trying to improve performance - i dont think you need to eat before hand unless you actually start having problems. If that's the case, maybe a piece of light fruit or something.

I drink a cup of milk before my long runs if it's early in the a.m.  Those runs are usually well over an hour and I just dont' have enough umph to get through them without it.  But my normal workouts, I don't do anything but I do keep G2 to help me through if I need a little boost.

just wanted to add that I never started doing that UNTIL I reached a normal BMI, while I still had fat to lose I did nothing at all.

Thank you for your replies! I'll try to do it without eating and see how it goes.

I can't eat before either.  Even water before is an issue for me.

I eat at least 1-2 hours before working out, because it takes about 2 hours for carbohydrate to be digested. A pre exercise meals consisting of protein and 200 to 300 grams of carbohydrates should therefore be consumed 3 to 5 hours in advance.
