I am 51 and training for my first 1/2 marathon. Tomorrow is supposed to be a 9 mile run. I am still, sore from my weekly training and I am busy with life this weekend, BUT I will feel so guilty if I don't try. 1/2 marathon is not until Feb. so I can skip a week, right? I am hosting a baby shower for my daughter on Sunday and I just want to enjoy tomorrow setting up and tending to all the details without feeling like crap because I am recovering from a long run. Am I justifying not running, or am I doing the right thing be giving myself a break?

I'm a little phsyd (sp?) right now.

Advise????

Thanks

Terri

Im running my first 1/2 in a couple weeks and once I hit my longest run of 7 miles, i ended up with hip brusitis and had to take 3 weeks off. After 3 weeks, I attempted a 15K run and did just fine (and better than fine - the rest worked wonders for my body). Just listen to your body.

You would soon forget a missed training run, however, you will ALWAYS regret missing important life events like your daughter's baby shower. LIFE COMES FIRST!!! Running is something we DO, family is who we ARE! Always remember your priorities... I got caught up in the race / training trap and lost sight of what in life is really important. I have finally found the perfect balance and I assure you, my daughters cheerleading, sons football, a day at the zoo, or whatever will ALWAYS come before any training run or race because with them is where true happiness is :)

Hi and thanks for putting things into prospective for me.  I faced my trainer and told him I put my life events first and skipped the run.  All he did was up my next run to 9.5 miles (my punishment?).  I am still going to try and meet goals, but I will not beat myselft up if it takes me a little longer to meet my goals than my 20 something year old trainer thinks it should take.

Thanks,

T-Roy

I've had to ditch entire races due to health or family things going on (hello, let's transfer you from Oregon to Wisconsin).  I had to take a month off basically.  You know what?  I've come back faster and stronger.  A day off, even a week off and you'll be fine.  If your trainer gets worked up over that it's time to find someone who has a life too.  LOL

I'm so excited for you with the Half Marathon-I had so much fun at one a few months ago in Eugene, OR.
