Santa Rosa Island Triathlon
DID IT!!! I finished my goal triathlon today! AND I did it about 2 minutes faster than I did for the full course practice 3 weeks ago AND I beat my 5k PR also set at the full course practice - from a 38:10 to a 36:06!
Friday I had a class at work from 0830-1230, worked out upper body with the trainer from 1300-1400, then took my 17yr old nephew to get 55 bales of hay loaded up (I tossed, he stacked). As soon as we got the trailer home and unhitched -s till full of hay- I showered and bolted to the beach to try to make the pre-race meeting, packet pickup and expo. I barely made it to the meeting, then wandered around the expo for just a few minutes. I had to go by my parents to help my mom to bed, then I finally got to go home tend my animals and pack my gear. Of course I packed, unpacked, did the check list and packed /repacked again. I finally went to bed around 10 but between text messages and the dog I am dogsitting whining, it was midnight or so before I went to sleep. Woke up at 0345, just before my 0400 alarm.
I put the dogs out, had a click and got dressed. Loaded my gear in the truck then went back to make a ww bread, peanut butter and banana sandwich (1pc bread). Also had some pretzels.
Transition opened at 0530 and I was there finding my rack and getting set up. At around 0640 as I was going to walk to the swim start I found my best friend and her husband! YAY I had fans!!! (my boss ended up coming as well). We walked down the beach and waded around some. The water was 76* but felt great compared to the 68* air temp. The Gulf was amazing - small surf near shore and glass further out.
There were at least 12 waves and I was in the Athena group - the #3 wave. We went with a ladies age group as well as a men's age group. There was 4min between each wave. The first buoy was 75yds out, then a right turn to go 450yds parallel to shore, then another 75yds back in. As I turned the first buoy my goggles fogged. I just kept going as long as I could stand it, but finally had to tread water long enough to clear them. I jogged up the beach but just walked the cobble stone part of the pavilion area - I could just see me doing a face plant! My practice course swim was like 15:20 but this was 18:41.
I did better in T1, but still need work... shirt, bike shoes, sport beans, helmet and gone. 3:44
The bike is my worst part. I dont know why? but my legs always seem to feel trashed by about 2 1/2 miles. Today I did fine for over 8 miles. There was horrible fog once we got out of town (about 4 miles). It was so thick I had droplets on my arm hairs and the visor of my helmet. Where the road was washed out the turn around was on a 2 lane road so just a button hook turn. There was about a mile where I kind of hit a wall, but I decided to go hard because I knew I could do the 5k even if I had to walk. The bike in chute was pretty narrow and crowded - there were volunteers and signs sayig slow down but of course there's always one who has to zip through and squeeze between people. Too bad for him the head official was standing there. Bike was trimmed down by a little from 55 something to 51:03.
My bike rack was on the complete opposite corner and I always walk because I just know I will nose dive. I don't usually have too much trouble in T2 - switch shoes, ditch the helmet for a visor. I do slip on shorts over my swim shorts - I just feel like I owe that courtesy to the general public lol. T2 - 4:04
I jogged out of the transition area and managed to keep jogging past my friend, my boss and the cameras. Then I walked a few seconds, ran a certain distance (to a sign, house, car, etc). Not even a mile in my knees started feeling like every step someone was knocking me with a baseball bat. I was almost in tears but I decided it was hurting anyway, there was NO WAY I was quitting, so I might as well keep jogging as much as I could stand and just get it over with faster. My previous 5k PR was made at the full course practice - 38:10. Today was 36:06!!!
Total time - 1:53:36. I placed 4/9 in my age group within the Athena division and 8/18 for the whole division. The 3rd place person was 1:50:37. Of course I immediately thought "I can train and beat that next year! I can actually train towards the podium!" lol
I signed up for a massage from the chiropractic group for my knees. They said it would be at least 30 m inutes, so I went for a regular massage as well. I still had time to move my bike from transition to my truck so I did. When I got back she told me I was the last person, they were going to quit after me even though other people had signed up. The guy messed with my knees and said my IT bands were really tight (or something like that). I know he found some pressure p oints that nearly made me sit straight up on the table. When I texted my trainer to tell her my results I also told her about my knees (since I am registered for a 10k next week) and she said she would show me how to use a foam roller as well as some soft stretches.
I stayed for the awards (they were giving away 3 bikes as door prizes!) and ate the after food - catered by a very nice Italian restaurant. I headed home around noon. I spent a little time talking to my parents, then went and moved the trailer and started unloading hay. I would unload / stack about 10-15 bales at a time, then take a break and go inside to help my mom, or take her out to bathe, put on clean sheets on her bed - unloading and stacking hay. I also unloaded 150lbs of feed and fed the horses, then went and fed my chickens and rabbits, showered and left for the high school to watch my youngest nephew march in a competition. They were awesome!!
Now, - I have had supper, a shower, and a sit down - I am ready for bed.
RIght now? My knees are giving me agony... I am going to practically crawl home, douse them in biofreeze and try to get in the bed. I dread tomorrow, but I sure have loved today!!!
