Bike Ride / Race
The bike portion is my absolute worst part of Tri training. I really want to work on it but I am not sure this is teh right venue? I know I can do 18 miles, we do it in training, I am just stinking slow because my legs wear out.
Are cyclists as friendly and forgiving to newbies as Triathletes are? Would I be welcome at something like this, or should I practice on my own?

I found cyclists for the most part to be very friendly/accepting/encouraging when I was cycling and very new.
But - i dont know what your longest ride is, but if its in the 18-20 mi range, I dont know if id recommend attempting a century as soon as October. I was doing 30-35 mi rides and went to do a 64 mi ride and it was the most painful experience...going from 20-100 - sound pretty tough.
Id pick maybe an early spring century to train for?

You might be able to do the 40. You know you can do 18 - take the challenge. Just add a couple miles each wee****il the ride and you'll be close.
You're a rock star - i know you can do it!

i could go on for days about the differences (and similarities) between the running, triathlon, and cycling communities. at the hard core level (A-group riders/semi-pro/elite racers) the cyclists are the toughest to deal with. However, at the regular joe/jane level, like you will find on a charity ride you have posted, everybody is very friendly, supportive, and great.
Where are we going?? And why am I in this handbasket??
right now. somewhere. somebody is working harder than you.
