how long after surgery did you wait to start working out at the gym?

6 weeks before I could lift something heavy (over 20 pounds).  But I could and did walk...and walk...and walk some more.  As you build up the endurance, the exercise part becomes easier and easier.

I would seek the advice of your surgeon on that one...

Depends on your definition of working out - at 3 weeks out, I went to the gym and walked on the TM for 20 min at a very slow pace. I didnt pick up the pace until about 6 weeks out, didnt touch weights until I was about 8 weeks or so.

My doctor said work out as soon as possible, but no strenuous work out until after six week post op visit. Check with your surgeon.

I was told walking and stationary bike was good from day one. I have avoided the gym this week (out just a week today) because I do feel great and know my tendency to over do it. I've done some neighborhood walks and plan on using the treadmill at my house until I see the surgeon on Wed.
