Walking/Jogging Questions

Hi!  I want to amp up my walk/jog workout, but I seriously need some better shoes.  Can anyone recommend some good, reasonably priced shoes for walking/joggin?

Also,  I have not found a pedometer that works well at all.  I've seen the ones that are combo pedometer/heart rate monitors that look like wris****ches.  Do any of you have experience with those?  Can anyone recommend one that's reliable but not too pricey?

Thanks,
Edie

Your best bet is to go to a running store (not a sporting goods store) and get fitted.  They will spend time to watch how you walk/run and put you in a shoe for your specific needs.  They will run about $100, which is not bad considering most people can get at least a year out of a pair.

I speed walk and run, and wear Saucony Progrid Guide 4.  This is what the running store put me in and I love them.  I am just over a year since I bought them and can tell the "cush" is wearing out and I need a new pair....I've put over 500 miles on them.

I don't use a pedometer because I know the distance of the places I walk/run....I just make sure I do it in the alloted time to ensure I'm "getting my move on".

I use my phone to know how far I've gone, there are a number of free aps that will do that with pretty good accuracy (endmodo, cardio tracker etc.).  Also there's an online website called map my run, so you can go on there, map out the route you should go to meet the mileage you want.  And there's no way to know what shoe is best for you, I second the above, head to a running store let them tell you.

When I was fitted at the running store, they first asked quite a few questions, then had me do about a minute barefoot on a treadmill.  It recorded my run and he backed it up and showed it to me in slow-motion and showed me how I wa****ting etc...

Then, he went to the back and picked out a couple pair of shoes.  He put one on each foot and had me go for a little jog outside the store on the sidewalk (about 25 yards) and tell him which one felt best.

Then, he put the second one on the other foot and had me take another little jog and tell him how it felt...  He also recommended an OTC orthotic and he put those in the shoes and had me jog again.  They were very thorough.  My shoes are Brooks Ghost 4.

The shoes themselves were $110.  Not counting the orthotics and socks I bought :-)

Thanks, Dot.  Excellent information.  I don't know if there's a running store around here.  Surely somewhere in the New Orleans area there's bound to be one.  I bought ANOTHER pair of shoes this week (I have several).  They, like their predecessors, felt fine when I tried them in the store.  I even jogged up and down the aisles a bit.  But once I actually started walking/jogging they began hurting my feet.  Tonight my toes are perpetually spasming and the sole of my left foot feels like it has a giant blister on it.  I guess I'll keep looking.
