Mini Marathon
How do you train for a mini marathon? I've never been a runner. Even in HS when I was thin I couldnt run. I go to the gym and use the elliptical and usually do 3miles in 25mins. I do weights, walking, and machines. When I walk at the gym this 70+ woman always passes me. I am so slow! How do I speed things up without feeling like IM going to pass out?
Have you tried walking or jogging in park? and not only in gym using elliptical? that will help you. Walking or jogging in a side walk and not only in a elliptical machine will help you boost your stamina. If you can go to a park add some miles lets say 5 miles in 25 mins? if that is still tough for you then start at 3.5 miles in 25 mins then the next time try 3 miles for 25 just add more miles then when you can do it 5 miles in 25 mins. that will be good enough I think for mini marathon you are planning to join. Good Luck!
5 miles in 25 minutes? Better grow some wings and fly :)
Just focus on distance and speed will increase as your fitness increases but make sure you set realistic goals.

If you know anyone that can do 5 in 25 you seriously need to tell them to consider training a bit harder and going as that is a 5 minute mile or about 12mph.
depending on the length of the run I am good for 9-11 minutes per mile. Some of the faster folks here are closed to 7:30.
The best way to get faster is to run faster learn the mechanics of good form and then push harder.

I'd recommend the Couch 2 5K program to start running.
How far is a mini marathon? You will want to slowly and gradually build up your mileage - I'd worry about speed later on once you are comfortable going longer distances. Try not to compare yourself to other people though - just set some goals for yourself and keep working at it. I never thought I'd be a "runner" but i'm slowly starting to feel like I can do this even though by most standards i'm pretty slow. For me, I just want to get it done - I don't need to be super fast.

Couch 2 5k is one of the best organized and support methods for starting running that I have seen!! It is realistic and you build endurance and don't even realize it!!
As for speed, concentrate more on finishing the distance and worry less about speed until you are regularly running your distance. (5k, 10k, whatever)
I got passed yesterday in one of my 5 minute segments (Week 4 C25k) by a gentleman in his 70s but he something encouraging as he went by. We all start somewhere!
Some of my "runs" get slow at times, and I honestly could "walk" faster, but I try to make myself stay in the jogging mode.
It gets addicting though....I am really looking forward to finishing the program and running my first ever 5k!!
