Accepting Limits

So, this past Sunday I was signed up for Wildcat route (125miles) of the Chico Wildflower Century in Northern California.

However, on Saturday I decided to ride with friends in the beautiful mountains between the South Bay Area and the Ocean, 50miles with 4,500ft of climbing.

Most of the climbing was at the end, and it had 3 sections that were over 30% grade- that was NO JOKE! But, I had a great time with my buds, and then drove the 4hrs up to Chico and was bushed!

In the morning I decided to not do the Wildcat and instead do the 100mile route which had over 4,000ft of climbing as opposed to the 125 which had 6,500.

I know in my head that I made the right choice (esp. since I brought the wrong shorts), but it's so hard to not feel like a quitter.

I'm still really struggling with accepting the fact, that's it's okay that I didn't do the extra climb, but I'm training for the Death Ride in July and I really should have been able to do those miles by now.....back and forth...back and forth...good enough...what a quitter- grrr!

I need to get outta my head!!!!

Okay - looking at your mileage for the year, you've been glued to that saddle!! You made the best choice - you don't want to push or hurt yourself right now and jeopardize the rest of your training schedule. I think you are a super star and I know it must be frustrating, but you just have to believe you made the right choice.

Thank you for the kind words Alison,

ok, so you rode a tough 50 miles of climbing and THEN did a century the next day.  that's 100 miles you know.  i don't think you are looking at this in the right way :)
Where are we going??  And why am I in this handbasket??

right now.  somewhere.  somebody is working harder than you.

Damn I feel so small with my 29 miles and 1200 feet.

Look back at your accomplishments and the way you inspire people to push themselves.  I wish I could ride half what you do.

Hey that's not small- that's a hardcore workout!

It's not that I don't think 100 is awesome, it totally is- I just feel like not going the extra miles makes me a chump...plus they had really cool jerseys for the 125!

Don't make me come slap you silly!  You've made amazing strides and remember, you recovered from an accident that would've kept most off the bike for good!

Quitter is not even in your vocabulary!  Stop the head games or it will rob you of the joy you get from doing it-and when the joy is gone, you'll stop forever-and that is not an option!

And really?  you were gonna do 125 miles in a weekend and ended up doing 150!  You are freakin amazing!

Hugs
