Running question.....again
If you have a minute I would like some opinions. I am currently on week 5 day 2 of C25k- 2 5minute runs and one 8 minute run with 5 min walk in between. I got through the 8 min ok. My question is about my pace- which most people could walk which is between 4.2 (first run) to 4.5 (last run). I bring it down to 3.8-4 for my walk. As I said, I am getting through the workout ok, not having to walk when I am supposed to be running. Should I repeat a couple of days/weeks until I get my pace a bit better? I am usally doing this on the treadmill, becuase of my work schedule. I was able to do my 5K last week in 44 minutes and jogged about 1/2 of it. I am feeling really good (I am actually loving it) and dont want to screw anyting up. First big goal is in May which is a 5K Friday night and a 10K Sat am. I realize may not be able to run the entire 10K and I am ok with that. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.
I didn't do C25K so I don't know if repeating the week would hel*****t. I do know that for me I push myself on every run. If I am not going farther then I will go faster. I want to finish each running feeling good but knowing that I gave it everything I could.
If you feel like you gave it everything you could then continue through the program and focus on speed later. Right now you are basically working to get some endurance so you can complete the distance. As you body adapts and you can more easily do the distance then you can focus on speed.
Not everyone who can run fast can do it for a distance. I work with a guy that does intervals on the hamster wheeel with a run speed of 8.5mph but damn if he wasn't dead after doing 1.25 miles at an avg 6mph pace.
The main thing is to have fun with it.

I think you should focus on getting some endurance first and then increasing speed will be easier. If I try to increase my speed by more than .1-.2 I end up winded before I get anywhere, but slowly and surely, im getting faster. My first mile that I "jogged" was 15 minutes, and over the last 6 months or so, I've increased my avg pace to 12 min/mile. (on the TM anyways)
I really recommend, as much as you can, running outside because there is a huge difference between TM running and running outside. I can run about 4 miles or so on the TM, but outside, I feel lucky to make it to a mile at the same pace, or I end up running much slower. Just kind of an FYI so you can be as prepared as possible for an outdoors 5K/10K.

Thanks for the input!! I like to run outside but the shifts I have been on have kept me off the road because of the dark and no lights where I live. I was suprised at the 5K I did last week I did ok! But then I really wanted to beat a specific time. I love the thought of a 12 minute mile consistantly!!! Good for you! Thanks again for the input.

I never concerned myself with speed during the couch to 5k. I just ran what felt sustainable. After several months of increasing distance, I knocked several minutes off my 5k time without really having done any "speed work".
So, my personal recommendation is not to worry about it at this stage of the game. Just work on getting in the distance.
