Small but Mighty
There is a street close to where I grew up, that is part of the Tour of California road race that I have always wanted to ride. I was, however, always too afraid- as I've driven up it and it's very steep.
Well yesterday I decided that I wanted to ride during the SB as I couldn't care any less about football, so I thought I'd give the loop a try. It was BRUTAL! One of the toughest climbs that I've ever done.
Now, I was a bit tired from the previous day's 57mile ride, but I think that it would have been hard regardless. Even though the avg grade is only 9% There are many sections that are 16-21%!
I am so proud that I did it- and even though I stopped once to catch my breath, I didn't walk any of it!!!! YEAH!
Here's the stats for those Strava inclined!
- Start (bottom) of the climb: corner of Piedmont & Sierra Road in San Jose, just south of Milpitas
- Elevation gain: 1,800′ or 1,843′ . During the Tour of CA, commentators Paul Sherwin and Bob Roll were referring to the climb as 2,000′.
- Length: 3.6 miles
- Average gradient: 9.6%
- Average gradient at the bottom of the climb: 15%
- Felix’s best time up Sierra Rd.: ~34 minutes
- Elite cyclists’ time up Sierra in Stage 2 of the Tour of California: ~22 minutes
- My time 1hr!
