I am trying to figure out how much and what I should be eating.

Out on my ride today, I ate a protein bar for breakfast, and ate a couple small cliff protein/energy bars over a 3 hour period(about 100 cal/hour)

I drank about 50-60 oz of water/electrolytes. When I was done, i was a little bit dizzy/weak, so Im assuming its a hydration/nutrition issue.

How many calories should I be taking in and what should I be eating  - im not a fan of the bars I was eating today because they made me a little bit naseaous after the first one.

Next weekend I'll be doing a 55 mile ride, and I have no idea really where to start with a nutrition plan other than to just eat whatever they have at the SAG stops and refill my water bottles.

Any help?

you may want to try GU or Hammer Gels for your rides.  One every 30-45 minutes.  As for pre-ride nutrition I would say probably not enough.  I know on hard workout days I will load shake wih a banana and then eat a waffle or toast with PB.  It also depends on what you ate and did yesterday.

I even have a hard time with this and stuggle with it every day, but!

Carbs provide you fuel. They build your glycogen stores which is what you need for these types of things.  This may sound gross but does your sweat or clothes smell like ammonia after?  If so it means you are burning protein and not carbs, which is not a good thing.

Most people can absorb 200-300 calories an hour. So you don't want to eat  more than that because it can give you GI distress.

Also, most people find liquidy calories easier to digest. So maybe instead of just bars, have a sports drink and then use bars to fill in the gaps.

Okay so I did a 57mile ride this Sat and here's what I ate:

Bfast: 300 cal chicken, 1 banana, 16oz coffee
Mile 10: 200 cal 20protein Jay Robb bar (YUMO!)
Mile 25 later :1oz nuts/dried fruit and 1/2 Larabar (same thing really)
Lunch stop Mile 30: 4oz grilled chicken and 8oz coffee
Mile 40: 1/2 Larabar
Mile 57: Chicken salad with egg

I also had 2, 30oz bottles with water and an electrolyte tab (love the Camelbak ones!).

Hope this helps! What ride are you doing?

Have fun,
:Danni
